Jay-Z Wants To Protect Hip-Hop
'Watch The Throne' entered the UK album chart at No. 3 last night and is on-course to top the US album chart later this week with sales of over 500,000 copies. After the positive public reaction to the album, Jay-Z has revealed that his joint project with Kanye West was their way of ensuring that hip-hop remains a dominant genre of music and isn’t outshone by dance music...
During an interview with radio host Lorenzo Thomas, Jigga said: "It's just protecting the music and the culture. It's like, 'Watch the throne,' protect it. You just watch how popular music shift and how hip-hop has basically replaced rock 'n' roll as the youth music. The same thing could happen to hip-hop. It could be replaced by other forms of music.
"So it's just like making sure we're putting that effort in making the best product, so that we can contend with all the other music. With dance music dominating the charts right now, indie music – that’s dominating the festivals and still holding off rock ‘n’ roll. We need to hold our place and make sure that hip-hop is still the most dominant form of music around the world."
David Guetta better watch out!
