Lauryn Hill Sentenced To Three Months In Prison
Lauryn Hill returned to court yesterday (May 6) to hear the verdict on her future after she was pulled up on tax evasion. The singer owed 'Uncle Sam' $1.8 million in unpaid taxes, although her lawyer stated that she had paid back $970,000 and her new deal with Sony to release music was expected to more than cover the remainder…
Unfortunately, the singer was not spared prison, and will need to allegedly need to report there by July 8. The 37-year old was sentenced to three months in jail as well as three months of home confinement, which will be followed by nine months of supervised release.
Hill released a statement to the judge in her defense, which claimed: “I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that.
“I was put into a system I didn’t know the nature of… I’m a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me. I sold 50 million units … now I’m up here paying a tax debt. If that’s not likened to slavery, I don’t know what is.”
The Fugees frontwoman released ‘Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)’ over the weekend, which you can listen to below.
