Live Review: Standon Calling Festival
Tucked away in the picturesque acres of east Hertfordshire, Standon Calling has rapidly established itself as one of the UK’s leading independent music festivals. The theme for this year’s event was ‘Journey to the ends of the Earth’ – and with the help of distinctive audio brand Skullcandy, eager festival goers were certainly taken on a journey…
Shrouded in mystery, the ‘secret’ Discovery Meantime Stage was unveiled to the eagerly awaiting crowds at 11pm on Friday evening and it certainly did not disappoint. The infamous Tree Bar (yes, it was located in a tree) was transformed into an impressive DJ booth/V.I.P hangout spot, with audience members including the cast of Channel 4 reality show ‘Summer Daze.’
The explosive unveiling was injected with bass from Radio 1 DJ Toddla T, who kicked proceedings off with a high-octane set that made the awaiting crowds erupt with excitement. Showcasing a fast-paced mash-up of bass, dubstep and the finest electronic beats the set was brought to a definite climax when Toddla dropped the Kanye West and Jay-Z anthem ‘N****’s in Paris’ – at which point the crowd erupted into an incredible mosh pit.
Keen to maintain the amazing momentum amongst the crowd, D&B legend Shy FX took to the booth playing a mix of old school garage and D&B anthems, including a power line-up of tunes from the likes of Azaelia Banks, Lethal B and Vybz Kartel.
The crowd once again descended into hysteria when Shy launched into two of his classic hits, ‘Original Nuttah’ as well as 2002’s ‘Shake Your Body’ - he truly took fans on a musical journey with him.
The Skullcandy powered Discovery Meantime Stage proved to be one of the most popular attractions for revellers, many of whom were lucky enough to bag exclusive Skullcandy merchandise, such as custom headphones, hoodies and much more!
As the music wrapped and the sun came up, ravers were keen to keep the party going and descended onto the on-site shisha-bar, leaving their neglected tents behind to start the party all over again!
