Maz’S Weekend Word: Nicki Minaj Goes On A Rant, Lil Kim Gets Hypocritical, Azealia Banks Disses T.i.
Nicki Minaj has been speaking about her album in the run-up to its UK release on April 2. Again, the rapper has been defensive about the genre she has been messing with of recent – namely pop. Questioned by VIBE Magazine, she said: “I'm not going to break my album down based on percentage of rap and singing. What it is, is amazing music...”
But will there be any real rapping in there? VIBE got no answer in particular: "It's going in a very free, exhilarating direction in terms of me owning who I am and me enjoying the process of making music.” Sounds good, but we wonder what sound will the album have overall? Nicki said: “You know what? I cannot break my album down into how the normal person like yourself would break an album down and say, ‘Well, this is rap and this is pop.’”
The diva femcee went on to conclude: "There is no rap or pop for me. It's Nicki Minaj. It's one collective body of amazing work. You'll feel it. I don't like the labels because sometimes just by one word or one label, a person can take that the wrong way and apply a negative spin to that."
Although much of the music world is talking about the ‘Roman Reloaded’ album, it seems Nicki’s rival, Lil Kim, has finally had enough of speaking about the Young Money rapper. The Brooklyn-raised rapper appeared on 106 & Park recently and was asked if she would speak about her beef with Nicki, to which she responded, “No, why?”
She went on to say: “At the end of the day, this is about Kim right now. We gave you that movie already, you know what I’m sayin’? We movin’ on to a whole other direction and if it comes back that way, then we give y’all another movie. But right now, we’re moving into another direction. ‘Bout to drop some new singles for Queen Bee and Brooklyn.”
Kim later took to Twitter to thank her fans for showing up and supporting her. She then tweeted: “Even when [the presenter] Rocsi tried to get disrespectful towards the end and ask an inappropriate irrelevant question...”
Speaking of inappropriate, outspoken Azealia Banks has hit out at T.I. over Twitter after he dissed her on the radio. Azealia was initially rattled over Iggy Azalea, a female rapper that T.I recently signed to his label, Grand Hustle. The Australian gained a prestigious place on the front cover of XXL Magazine for the 2012 Freshman Issue, showcasing all the brightest up-and-coming talent.
Azealia took to Twitter to talk about the choice: “Iggy Azalea on the XXL Freshman list is all wrong. How can you endorse a white woman who called herself a “Runaway slave master”? Whatever. Sorry guys. But I’m a pro-black girl. I’m not anti-white girl, but I’m also not here for anyone outside of my culture trying to trivialize very serious aspects of it. In any capacity. *Kanye shrug* If you hate my music now because of how I feel about this, then I guess it’s my loss. I’ll take that loss.”
After the rant, Iggy and T.I. appeared on DJ Drama’s radio show together. Whilst the ‘freshman’ kept her response positive, T.I. has plenty to say on the matter: “Strategically, if she really cares about a Freshmen cover then maybe she could hope that, you know, she’ll suck enough to get shelved and then next year when the Freshmen cover comes back around, maybe she’ll still be a freshman. Which brings me to my next philosophy, if you spend half of your day getting money and the other half of your day counting money, you ain’t got no time in your day to worry about nobody else...”
Of course, Azealia wasn’t having it. She called T.I out on Twitter, saying: "Come On T.I… N***as is not scared of you and whatever s**t you got to say on some radio show. You corny for that one."
