Mindless Behavior: The Interview!
Mindless Behavior, also known as Princeton, Roc Royal, Prodigy and Ray Ray, are known for causing a frenzy everywhere they go, and that’s exactly what they did on their recent one-day visit to London. The Wrap Up’s Ra’ed Poetical caught up with the young R&B group to discuss their love for music, the new album and shutting down streets in New York City...
The Wrap Up: Welcome to London, guys. Nice to have you here…
Princeton: Thank you! It’s actually our second time here as well. About five months ago, we were here when we opened up for Jason Derulo and now we’re back just doing promo for our album, singles and everything else.
TWU: Cool! We have to ask, where does the name Mindless Behavior come from?
Princeton: Our team thought of the name when were first started. It’s about being yourself and not caring what other people think, just being mindless about everything that you do.
TWU: That’s positive! Okay, so how did you guys meet?
Roc Royal: Three years ago we had auditions and that’s where we all met up and formed the group. We practised like 10/11 hours every day! We were just doing it because we loved it. We never knew that we were going to have passionate fans; we were just working out every day because we loved it.
TWU: Congratulations on the new album, ‘#1 Girl’. What was it like recording together for the first time?
Princeton: It was fun! The late nights into the morning, drinking coffee to stay up, it was crazy.
TWU: Speaking of ‘#1 Girl’, is it true that you shut down local streets when you had the in-store signing?
Princeton: Yeah, in New York City! (Laughs)
Ray Ray: The day that our album was released, we had a whole block shut down and then we went to a Best Buy, did an in-store signing and had 2,000 fans there!
Princeton: The craziest fan experience we had was when we had a meet and greet a week before our album came out. 4,000 fans came and we couldn’t do it because fans started to fight, so the fireman shut it down (laughs). It feels cool because nobody cared the first time that we were in New York, but we’re shutting down streets now! Even here in London, there are loads of fans waiting outside right now (laughs).
TWU: (Laughs) Yes, you do have a lot of fans outside, don’t you? Cool! So, the new single, ‘Girls Talking About Us’, what’s the concept behind it?
Princeton: It came about from all of our fans talking about us. It’s my favourite song on the album! I love pop records that I can dance to. We shot the music video last month and it was just crazy.
TWU: Sounds good! Let’s talk influences now. Who do/did you guys look up to?
Ray Ray: As a group, we all love Michael Jackson.
Princeton: I like Prince and John Lennon, too. I’m a big rock fan, so I used to listen to people like Kurt Cobain a lot when I was growing up.
Prodigy: I’ve got to say Usher and Chris Brown...
Roc Royal: Oh! I have to say TLC and Boyz II Men, too.
TWU: Some great influences there. Who would you love to collaborate with?
Roc Royal: I think that all of us would like to work with Jessie J. She was everywhere and we had no idea who she was, but we bought her album and she’s amazing!
Ray Ray: Collaborating with Drake would be the bomb!
TWU: How crazy was it touring with Justin Bieber?
Princeton: We gained a lot of fans from that tour – it was surreal for us. It went from executive meetings to arenas every night. It was really fun.
TWU: Do you still get the time to do normal things?
Prodigy: Yeah, once in a while we get time to just take a break to go and see our family…
Ray Ray: Or go to the mall and just to hang out. I love going to the amusement parks, I love big rides!
TWU: What’s your favourite thing about being in the UK?
Ray Ray: Girls! (Laughs)
Princeton: Just the atmosphere. I just love everything here: the fashion, the people, oh, and the weather! Twilight weather (laughs).
Ray Ray: I love the food here, too. Everything is in proportion. Our apples are huge compared to yours.
TWU: For all of the fans who want to do what you guys are doing now, what would be your advice to them?
Ray Ray: Be confident, have a great work ethic and stay mindless!
Prodigy: Always stand up for what you love no matter if people tell you that you can’t do it. Who cares?
TWU: What is Mindless Behavior’s ultimate ambition?
Princeton: We want to act, win a lot of awards and still stick together. Five years down the line, we’re going to be sitting here with you guys with bigger hair, facial hair and deeper voices (laughs).
