Radio 1’S Hackney Weekend 2012 – Highlights So Far
Yesterday, around 50,000 music lovers headed to Hackney Marshes for a musical line-up so epic, East London was being watched from all over the world. With stages dedicated to all genres, the line-up consisted of stars from the UK to the other side of the pond. Undoubtedly, there was one crew that dominated the day with their spectacular performances…
Roc Nation boss Jay-Z headlined Saturday’s event - and headline he did. The mogul had the audience restless with anticipation as he took to the stage late, but had the crowd in fits as they realised that Sunday’s headliner Rihanna had also joined him to perform ‘Run This Town’. We also saw new Roc Nation member M.I.A take to the stage to perform ‘Paper Planes’ and ‘Bad Girls’, which was sadly effected by the audio issues that occurred on-and-off throughout the evening.
As well as performing hits such as ‘Dirt Off Your Shoulder’ and ’99 Problems’, Jay also gave the audience something they couldn’t have expected – a generous portion of the ‘Watch The Throne’ set. With Beyonce in the audience cheering them on, Kanye West joined his friend on stage to perform ‘Otis’, ‘Church In The Wild’ and more before dropping ‘N***a’s in Paris’ several times.
Aside from Roc Nation tearing the event to shreds, many of the finest British acts took to the many stages to demonstrate why the UK music industry is fast becoming central to popular culture. Pop sweetheart Rita Ora got the crowd jumping and the beautiful Leona Lewis had the audience mesmerised as she performed hits including ‘Happy’.
Soul stars Delilah and Emeli Sande also wowed the crowd with their serene vocals. Ed Sheeran prompted one of the most epic sing-alongs with ‘The A Team’, whilst Tinchy Styder, Example, Chip and many others represented for UK rap.
US artists also performed at full-force, one highlight being Nicki Minaj lighting up the stage with her colourful performance of ‘Starships’; not to mention Trey Songz almost giving the ladies in the crowd a heart attack with his smooth performance.
With today's acts consisting of headliner Rihanna, Nas, Azealia Banks, Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, Lethal B, Mindless Behavior and countless others, it is sure to be another explosive day for the people of Hackney.
