Review: Happy Birthday Vice Uk!
Our friends over at VICE UK know how to throw parties – fact. So when we were invited to check out London grime legend Wiley and Detroit’s Danny Brown at their 10th anniversary bash in London, we were pretty excited. The unlimited free drinks and a host of amazing DJ's including Mark Ronson, Mischa Mafia and the GETME! collective meant that the dancefloor was crowded from the get-go. Flashing graphic images from VICE documentaries on the walls further added to the hedonistic underground vibe…
Tyler, The Creator’s favourite band Trash Talk opened the show with a bang, uniting hip-hop and hardcore fans in a sweaty moshpit. But we were most excited about seeing two of our favourite rappers from both sides of the pond live and we rushed to the bar to find out when and where Wiley and Danny would be performing. To our dismay we were told Wiley had cancelled his set; but our disappointment vanished quickly as the mad, bad Danny Brown leapt onstage to massive cheers from a pumped-up crowd. He performed tracks from his last two full-length albums ‘XXX’ and ‘The Hybrid’ as well as mixtape tracks with his usual inimitable drawling swag, with ‘Blunt after Blunt’ provoking a riotous mass singalong.
With our appetite for hip-hop satisfied for the night (or so we thought!), we fought through the crowd to grab a drink, on the way overhearing someone saying something about a ‘mystery guest’. As we returned to the stage area we realised that the surprise was none other than Danny’s fellow XXL Freshman MC, seductive Australian rhymer Iggy Azalea. Decked out in a sexy cheerleader outfit which showed off her admirable assets and backed up by two equally badass dancers, Iggy spat expertly through fan favourites including ‘Pu$$y’, ‘U Ain’t My Daddy’ and ‘Drop That S**t’.
The crowd adored her, and at one point we feared that she might be pulled into the pit, ponytail first. It was clearly important for Iggy to prove herself in front of such a big UK crowd and she killed it. Overall, it was a great lineup and yet another sick party from VICE – we just hope Wiley can make it next time!
