The Wrap Up's Donatella reviews XXL Freshman for 2014 cover star Jon Connor's debut Hollywood show
Hot off the back of gracing the cover of XXL’s “Freshman List” issue, Dr Dre’s protégé Jon Connor took to the stage recently for his Hollywood debut. I headed down for The Wrap Up to check out the show…
I arrived at Troubadore to find Connor and his supporting acts had attracted an eclectic crowd. The stereotype that might typify some rappers' audience definitely wasn’t the case tonight, it was a more mature crowd, not in age but most definitely in demeanor. The atmosphere was calm in between acts but soon changed when rapper Kap Kallous stepped on to the stage to warm up the crowd for his “best friend” Jon. Kap instantly commanded the attention of the audience, kicking things off with the title track to his forthcoming album ‘Grandeur” he progressively hyped the audience with an impressive performance in perfect preparation for the headline performance. By the end of his set it was all hands in the air ready for Jon Connor.
Entering the stage to his track “Someone Like Me” the atmosphere felt historic, Jon Connor looked ready to really put Flint Michigan on the music map. His voice, distinctively clear and concise wowed the audience throughout his set.
Throughout the show Jon shared numerous sporadic acapella verses executed with pure precision, teamed with polished performances of his current works, which had the entire audience captivated by the rapper's talents. He owned the stage and we - as an audience - were sold.
Jon not only impressed the audience with his technical and lyrical capabilities, he articulated himself in such a way in between performances that everyone felt the real words he spoke equally to his hard hitting bars.
On that night I witnessed the beginning of a movement, Connor season has well and truly begun.
