Review: Krept & Konan Live In London
On the afternoon of Saturday December 28, fans began queuing outside the 02 Academy in Islington to see South London lyricists Krept and Konan. Supporting the ‘Young Kingz’ was femcee Paigey Cakey and Krept and Konan’s Virgin EMI label mate, ‘Bad 4 U’ singer Tanika.
The main centrepiece on the stage was two thrones taken from their latest mixtape cover ‘Young Kingz’, which hit the top 10 in the UK charts (they got to no.1 in the hip-hop charts); around the same the duo received the ‘Best Newcomer’ award at the MOBOs and snagged a deal with Virgin EMI.
The pair kicked off the show with their cover of ‘Otis’. Fitting, as it marked a big turning point in their music career.
Moving onto ‘Go Down South’ featuring Chip and Yungen, Casyo ‘Krept’ Johnson and Karl ‘Konan’ Wilson got out of their thrones to vibes with the audience. The show was so enjoyable because it was an interactive party, full of surprises as friends of theirs joined them on stage throughout.
Yungen joined the pair for ‘Too Young’, as did Chip, who was also there for the performance of ‘Young N Reckless’. Other guests included fellow southsider Sneakbo and Misha B, who joined the stage to contribute vocals to the intense performance of ‘My Story’.
G FrSH burst onto the stage topless for ‘M.D.M.A’ and Gracious K even appeared on stage at one point to get everyone doing the ‘Migraine Skank’. Mental.
A performance of ‘Dancing On The Table’ featured an impressive pole dancer, and ‘Lord Forgive Me’ (minus Tinie Tempah) had the audience throwing beer everywhere. Wretch 32 also came out to support Krept and Konan, and even performed a bit of ‘Traktor’.
Before leaving the stage, the Play Dirty pair shouted out their home of Thornton Heath and thanked everyone for coming down. Of course, they returned for an encore, and it was none other than their current banger ‘Don’t Waste My Time’, which had their guest artists return together for an on-stage party.
The track was pulled up a few times, and it was announced that French Montana would be featuring on the official remix. HAAAAAAAN.
When we last spoke to the rapping duo, we asked what was next for them. Konan said: “Whatever we do it’ll still be 100% DIY. We gotta do what we gotta do to take this as far as it’ll go.”
Krept added: “Whatever we do next, we’re gonna make sure it’s massive.” The show certainly backed up their words.
