Rolling With Loick Essien
Hey everyone! It's your boy, Loick Essien, here and this is my first official column for The Wrap Up. Over the next four weeks, I'm going to let you all into my crazy world...
For those of you that don't know, my single, 'How We Roll', comes out in just under a month (July 3) and it has come around so quickly! My friend and label mate, Tanya Lacey, features on the track as well - she's definitely one you need to keep an eye on. The single is gonna be from my debut album, 'Identity', which is gonna drop later this year. It's been a whirlwind over the last month or so. I've been writing, I've been in the studio, I've been doing lots of promo for the single, so much so that I haven't had time to sit down. It's all good, though. That is how it should be at the moment!
I had a great trip to LA back in May, where I was in the studio with loads of great people. I hooked up with a producer called T-Minus, who has done a lot of stuff for the new Drake album and produced Nicki Minaj’s 'Moment For Life', so I was humbled to be sharing studio time with him. It was crazy in LA, I went to this party one night that was hosted by the team that produced the Big Sean record – who is one of Kanye West's new recruits – and Nas and Macy Gray were there as well. It was madness!
I've also been in the studio chatting with TMS, they’re a production trio who have made records for Professor Green, Devlin and Dot Rotten, so again, I'm so blessed to be working with all of these people. I had a great time taking part in the 'Soccer 6' tournament a couple weeks ago. My team was a great shout out for #TeamUK. We had Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder, Scorcher, Wretch 32 and DJ Target! I'm not gonna give away who was good and who was bad, though. We did alright! I had to play against Wagner from 'The X Factor', which was hilarious! He is such a character.
I had just come off my regional radio tour, where I travelled round the country and visited stations in Manchester, Newcastle and Birmingham, so I was tired. It was great to see some of my fans waiting outside to say hello! Big up #TeamEssien! Last week, I performed at the SB.TV launch party which was amazing. Everyone was there, and it was so good to see everyone out and supporting and enjoying themselves. My boy, Labrinth, was there and Ed Sheeran, Bluey Robinson, Keri Hilson and Ms Dynamite also represented.
There was a huge crowd and it felt so good to do another performance in front of so many friends and people I knew, it gave me such a buzz! So it's been a real crazy time lately and I feel like my feet haven't touched the ground. When I have had time to chill out, I've been hanging with my friend, Etta Bond - she is a new artist currently in development and is signed to Labrinth's label, OddChild. Again, expect big things from this little lady very soon.
I'm gonna leave you there, for now! But I’ll be back, same time, same place, with lots more to update you on next week! So until then, you can follow me on Twitter and Facebook to find out what I'm up to and #HowWeRoll…
