The Brink: Jay Prince
The Brink: A platform dedicated to revealing the hottest talent out right now. First up in this series Jay Prince
“Music is a lot of things for me. For me its freedom, it’s something that brings people together. It’s therapy for me most times... In a nutshell, music is everything.”
His BeFor Our Time EP has amassed an impressive over 3 million streams, all the radio DJ’s love him, he not only writes his own lyrics but he also produces the beats to go with it – Jay Prince is an artist who despite the heightened success of ‘Trap’ within Hip Hop still chooses to also delve in the classic sounds of the genre. This may be due to the fact that growing up he was immensely influenced by African gospel music as well as some of these iconic greats; Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Jay – Z, Outkast.
“I tend to take influences from multiple genres and just things I enjoy listening to whether it be Hip Hop or Soul etc etc”
“Juice represents overcoming things that hold you back…”
– it’s also the follow up track to lead single Afropunk. It features Minnesota rapper/singer Allan Kingdom and both tracks can be found on Prince’s new 8 track EP Beautiful Mercy. Most musicians find it extremely stressful competing with previous projects in the terms of success; aiming to surpass prior achievements ultimately growing and perfecting their craft however what’s important to Jay Prince is making people happy first and foremost – “As always I just want people to feel and understand where I’m coming from. To me that makes me happy knowing I can touch somebody with this project and be able to connect with people.”
With a brand new EP out now and a U.S tour kicking off in December including a performance at New York’s prestigious live music venue SOB’s; it’s onwards and upwards for this rapper/producer. We can only assume what new heights Jay Prince would like to take his music to in the future, perhaps selling out the O2 arena… Madison Square Gardens or even winning a Grammy?... but to put all speculations to bed Prince let us know that he has one ultimate goal and that is
“…happiness. Being able to do what I do and not lose touch with myself or the people and supporters I get to connect with on a deeper level. It’s truly more than music.”
