The Brink: Tiana Major9
I couldn’t believe a song about me would bang as much at this stage of my career
“Music is everything to me; I’ve invested so much time into it that it’s basically all I know…I genuinely feel happier when I’m involved in music…”
20 years young and going by the self – proclaimed title ‘Empress’ this singer/songwriter originating from East London takes style inspiration from the Hip Hop/Jazz culture. With her distinctive ‘marley twists’ and minimal make up look Tiana Major9 uses her influences such as; Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and D’Angelo to create music that reminds her listeners “…that having fears and insecurities are inevitable as humans but they should never stop us from being happy”.
Tiana Major9 also isn’t afraid to allow her music to speak to her audience in ways that’s liberating –
“I’d also like to remind my listeners to be true to who they really are! I’m a black, British, female and I want my listeners to understand what that’s like for me through my songs.”
Music always seems to take on a different meaning – feeling when it’s performed/filmed live. Tiana’s Ont Sofa session of her performing original song ‘Altitude’ demonstrates that ‘soul’ she embodies within her lyrics, simply through the way she harmonises. It's striking how vocally this young talent has a likeliness to your Lauryn Hills and Erykah Badu’s. For an artist in such a contemporary time within music; Tiana seems to radiate that same natural beauty these women, amongst many other Afro/American’s possessed during the 80’s.
As one of the runners up for the 2014 MOBO Unsung competition and supporting acts such as; Mic Lowry and Alexandra Burke, Tiana has not only accumulated attention from musicians/industry professionals alike, she also seems to have caught the eye of ‘Hackney’s Finest’ rapper SNE who had written a song about her entitled ‘Tiana Major’.
“At first, I was expecting to hear my own voice on the track lmao so I was anxious to listen to it but then once I saw the artwork, press and response from fans, I couldn’t believe a song about me would bang as much at this stage of my career.”
“…As far as me doing a response track… you never know, init! Ha…”
It’s always refreshing to get wind of a talent that restores your faith in a genre that one could say has taken a decline in previous years. However Tiana Major9 and other singers who she’s into – “Samm Henshaw, Ray Blk, J Warner and Teni Tenks” are all set to take RnB/Jazz/Soul music within the UK to phenomenal heights. In the meantime look out for new music from the ‘Empress’ “…and of course, you’ll get shows this year, performing is probably my favourite part of it all lol.”
“I don’t have an ‘ultimate goal’ as I have so many music goals for the future, but a huge one for me would be to write for/with (one of my favourite musicians of all time) D’Angelo. It would be a huge honour, especially as he’s been such an influence to music. (He’s definitely my MCE though)”.
