The Brink: Tom Prior
The Brink: A platform dedicated to revealing the hottest talent out right now. Next up in the series we have Tom Prior.
“Music is all I’ve ever known… I think generally speaking it’s one of the main things none of us need but nearly all of us like having it around.”
Artic Monkey’s Andy Nicholson and Reggae legend Dre Island have both sought out the young singer/songwriter to work with; he has also been busy making appearances on Radio 1’s iconic Live Lounge with fellow musicians Naughty Boy and Little Simz. Tom Prior is the name behind the voice that is set to leave an impressionable mark in 2016.
Tom gets a huge thrill from not only listening to music but also composing it, “…I have to be writing about something that has bothered me. Whether it’s how much I love someone or how much I miss someone who’s not here anymore.” He tries to have a balance between the concepts within his music, so not only drawing from ‘matters of the heart’ but also expressing ‘more mundane things’ an example of this can be found on his debut EP ‘Bad Advice’ where he talked about his former manager ripping him off.
“…I just use everything that happens around me for ideas and try not to over complicate things, having mates who talk a lot doesn’t do you any harm when you are a songwriter too.”
Take It All is the lead single from Prior’s forthcoming Paint The Ceiling Blue EP which is a project that depicts change/progression in his life. Tom not only speaks on the people changing around him but he also goes back to his childhood. “…I suppose growing up it begins to feel life will never be as simple or stress free as it is when you’re just a kid with an imagination. I’m quite excited for the future but you can’t help but reminisce sometimes.”
It’s often hard finding your feet in any career let alone one that derives from the creative arts. Talent just isn’t enough for musicians in this day and age; having numerous other qualities are vastly crucial – pinpointing ones ‘niche’ however Tom Prior finds that the process is much simpler than that... “I really don’t like to look at it like that to be honest. People appreciating my music is one of the best feelings but I don’t really feel it necessary to tell people why they should.” To ‘fit in’ isn’t an urgency of Tom’s, he doesn’t feel that ‘paranoia’ other artists may feel when creating music – that constant battle of creating music to ‘appeal’ or simply creating music one wants to. Tom is fortunate enough to run with the latter.
In a nutshell Tom Prior is “…having fun with it”.
