The Uk Rap Up
A New Year brings with it new goals and potential achievements; individually as well as for the UK scene as a whole. At times 2012 threatened to break into a sustained period of success, but overall, the year gone for me personally was slightly underwhelming. Hopefully 2013 brings about a more experienced and focused core of artists - as for the talent, that can never be questioned…
First things first; the annual MTV Best Of The Best list was high on the agenda for the month of January. The eventual and much deserved winner for the second consecutive year was Wretch 32, who said of the win: “Once is incredible, twice is truly unbelievable. Now I'm going for the hat trick."
A few artists maintained their places in the list; there were also a couple of surprises, with a female MC making it for the first time. Check out Lady Leshurr hit the number 9 spot now.
On the live music front, the biggest event going is the return of NewLDN at Concrete in Shoreditch on February 5, which will see an exclusive showcase of independent record label iRecords. Get on down there and take in the best they have to offer, with live performances on the night coming from the likes of Dru Blu, Marshall McFly, Young Spray, Young Mad B and much more.
In regards to releases, the independent outlaw Black The Ripper continues his increased work rate with the release of the impressive ‘Married To Marijuana’.
The most anticipated offering of the moment is Gunna Dee’s ‘Hustler By Nature 2’, the follow up to his wildly successful debut mixtape. After an indifferent last few months, Gunna decided to unleash the Wizzy Wow produced lead single ‘4 My Town’ featuring Loick Essien and declared his return to form. After a slight delay, #HBN2 should be out this month.
Surprisingly, the most unexpected development over the month of January actually occurred stateside. The end of the month saw the 26th WWE ‘Royal Rumble’ take place, with the official theme song belonging to none other than South London’s Clement Marfo & The Frontline with their 2012 single ‘Champion’.
Broadcast to millions around the world, there really is no comparison to such a global co-sign - great news for the guys, lets hope they can use the momentum to kick-start what should be another great year.
