The Uk Rap Up
In March we saw the benefits of having UK rap music pushed down different avenues previously unexplored, as Aiden Hogarth aka S.K.I.T.Z Beatz was selected as music composer of hit e4 drama Youngers. This month the trend continued with an even more unexpected placement, bringing together Wizzy Wow with Adidas and Chelsea Football club. The North London super-producer was tapped by the Premier League side to contribute the soundtrack to the promo advert for next years kit. Already a hugely successful and popular promo with over a million views to date, all I can say is well played Wiz…
In regards to releases this month, it’s been a little quiet; with most artists prepping their assault for the summer. Of what we’ve had, the stand out CD is most definitely ‘Legoman II’ from G FrSH, available as a free download. If you’re already a fan it’s pretty much more of the same wit and wordplay that we’ve all come to expect.
The UK scene has also maintained a strong presence on the live music scene in 2013 and this continued in April. Stand outs included DVS performing his hits at I Luv Live (XOYO) in Shoreditch, Shystie who we recently caught up with also at I Luv Live in Birmingham and Fekky who’s been up and down the country on the Wiley and Skepta headlined tour.
Finally, another event you may have heard of that took place in the past month was the fourth John Blaze Rap Jam. Some time last year the guys over at The Lost World realised the lack of specialist rap shows in the capital and embarked on providing a regular live rap showcase.
With nights in Brixton and Shoreditch to date, Aprils show (marking their one year anniversary) was headlined by the likes of Tee Stone, Mayne Mayjor and 3OW. The prospect of seeing good up-and-coming acts for free in London is always something worth celebrating; look out for the next show scheduled for July.
