The Uk Rap Up With Tobz
June finally saw the release of Fem Fel’s long-awaited debut album, 'Eyes Closed'. I had the privilege of listening to Fem’s album well before the release date and it looks like my initial reaction is now one shared by many more, as 'Eyes Closed' was released to overwhelmingly positive reviews and managed to break into the iTunes Hip-Hop Album Chart…
Amongst a multitude of releases, three of my favourite UK rappers over the past few years dropped projects: Benny Banks with 'Patiently Waiting Vol. 1', Timbar with 'Hidden Files' and Bigz with 'Quantum Leap'. These are all strong releases put out completely for free and, right now, I’d go as far as to say in the stakes of releasing top quality products on a consistent basis, the UK is more than matching with the states and it’s a joy to see.
Exo kept up the phenomenal work-rate of north London's USG camp and dropped 'The Appointment', yet another free download mixtape. The only difference is that this time it was in conjunction with an official mixtape launch party on the same night as a way of maximising publicity for the release. There were a few big performances on the night from the likes of Squingy and Jaga from USG, Young Mad B, Jaja Soze and Colours.
I spoke with Exo briefly after the night to get his thoughts on how it went down and he expressed his satisfaction in overcoming a minor hiccup surrounding the venue: "Fortunately, it was rectified and after filling out the other venue we had a great show," Exo told me. "Met a load of fans from Manchester and Birmingham and the turnout was crazy!" June currently stands as the most exciting month of the year so far, but with some big developments in the pipeline, there’s a big possibility that July could top it.
Also, if you haven’t already done so, check out my big interview with rising star Marshall McFly, expecting a lot of big things from him towards the end of the year. Finally, all releases mentioned in this month’s column have been reviewed by yours truly over at www.ukrapmusic.com, so check that out!
