The Uk Rap Up With Tobz
October saw a busy month of live concerts, showcases, raves and performances as the UK rap scene proved to be a large part of entertainment in many formats up and down the country. G.O.O.D Music rapper Pusha T arrived on our shores for a special intimate date in London courtesy of DJ Semtex and put on a great show…
Support came from the UK’s very own Benny Banks who could spare a little room for improvement, as we saw a fairly unorganised performance on the night. Contrastingly on the rave scene, Fekky and Young Spray performed at ‘Masterclass’ in Leicester and tore it down with a number of mixtape hits. With draconian form and licensing issues surrounding ‘urban’ music events in London, looking towards the midlands for more events is a logical and sensible idea - long may it continue.
In the capital, ‘Trill’ took place in south London, headlined by upcoming DJ and producer duo Stooki Sound (DJ Lukey and Jelacee). Incorporating UK bass, hip-hop and trap sounds, the pair are set to drop their debut EP real soon. Stooki also fronts an independent jewellery and apparel label, wisely spreading their brand onto different fronts. We will remain on the look-out for all their developments in the future.
Peckham-bred Buck (Michael Maris), already a much regarded actor in his own right, co-wrote and starred in feature-length film ‘Victim’. Following on from the theatrical release in April, ‘Victim’ was released on DVD at the start of the month. Do buy a copy and support - it’s a great watch!
On the CD release, super-producer Versa Beatz linked up with Tzar and the pair dropped the EP ‘XO.VS’, with news that a second instalment is already in the making. Bigz also revealed his next release with ‘The Bigz Bang Theory’, expected to drop next month.
Perhaps the most surprising news came at the very end of the month; north Londoner Black the Ripper announced the long-awaited ‘Black Is Beautiful 2’, the rapper was previously criticised over his work rate so it’s especially good to see ‘Samson’ back in the studio. ‘Black Is Beautiful 2’ should be out end of the month.
Until next month!
