The Uk Rap Up With Tobz
Despite the weather not being entirely appropriate for summer, the season is finally upon us! We are now at the peak of the biggest months in the musical calendar – regardless of genre, around this time period, the big hitters drop their projects and we, the public, get to enjoy the biggest shows and festivals…
The OMA’s [Official Mixtape Awards] went down in June, with awards handed out in 14 categories. The big winner on the night was Blade Brown, who took home the big one – ‘Best Hip-Hop Mixtape’ for last year’s brilliant ‘Financial Times’. Other notable winners on the night included Sneakbo and Ratlin who took home the awards for ‘Best Male Artist’ and ‘Best Newcomer.’ It truly is a great initiative, celebrating and rewarding those that excelled on the most common platform in the UK rap scene - the mixtape. A top notch event helmed by a strong and experienced team, in the second year of operation, we expect the OMA’s to grow bigger and better.
The Radio 1 Hackney Weekender also went down on June 23 and 24 - and it captivated the nation. Some of the world’s biggest stars descended upon east London to wow crowds of 100,000 over the course of two days. It was truly refreshing to see the organisers still had the presence of mind to not only include established UK rappers like Wretch 32 and Sway, but also to add up-and-coming acts such as Joe Black and Pepstar into the line-up. They gave them the exposure and experience that may well serve as the final push towards their breakthroughs.
More of the same will take place from 6-8 of July as the Barclaycard Wireless Festival goes down in London. Krept & Konan, Mikill Pane and Sneakbo are amongst the names that are set to fly the flag for UK rap and rock the stage - unmissable stuff.
Lastly, on the releases front, the biggest drop in June would be the sophomore release from SN1’s Gunna Dee. Having been very quiet for most of 2012 and with front man Giggs currently incarcerated, it was essential Gunna stepped up and delivered something for the fans.
