To My Loyal Munks, From Chipmunk...
How is everybody doing? It’s your boy, Chipmunk, signing in once again for my exclusive column for MTV's The Wrap Up! I’ve been working on my mixtape, 'Spazzz.com', over the last few months – which is out now – and it features the likes of Wretch 32, Tinie Tempah and Skepta. It’s a good little mixtape, still. I’ve also been doing all the festivals, just absolutely killing it and leaving a dent in every live show that I possibly get to do...
Outside of the music, I’ve been doing a lot of charity work for Children In Need, which is a big thing. Me, Gary Barlow, Tulisa, Labrinth, Rizzle Kicks, Ed Sheeran and Wretch 32 recorded a song and shot the video for the charity – which will all be out soon. I’ve also been designing my own fashion range that will be going on sale across Debenhams UK, with all of the proceeds going to Children In Need.
I also done a deal with adidas and Foot Locker for a new line of trainers called, 'Hard Court Hi'. You will be seeing my face at Foot Locker stores across Europe, so that was a big step for me and I did a little track, of the same name, to go along with it. The video for the track is online right now and it features Wizzy Wow, so make sure you check that out. Everything’s been going really well and I think when everyone hears 'Spazzz.com', they’re gonna have a fair idea of what’s about to happen and what will happen in the future.
A lot of people have been asking me about my latest F64. I just wanted to get a message across of where Chipmunk’s mind is at. Right now, there is a new wave amongst MCs for wanting to use punchlines and it’s not something that everyone’s been on in the past and, while I think that F64s are a place where people come to execute their punchlines, I feel that I’m at that place where it’s not just about punchlines/wordplay, it’s actually about the message you wanna get across. The first thing I wanted to do was get my message across. I’m always gonna throw in the odd punchline, but I just wanted to make sure that the punchlines were on subject and within context of the message that I’m delivering.
For instance, lines like, 'I’m getting older, I can feel my chin hair. I’m in the real world, the tortoise don’t win here…' It’s not just a metaphor for no reason. I’m saying I need to speed up and it’s a nice thought that I can go steady and slow, but in the real world, there are people doing things much quicker, so it’s like I’m saying to myself, 'Chip, you need to step your game up.' Lines like, 'F**k a hater, I know what I’m on. They blew up the job centre on the high road that I’m from', that’s me painting a picture of, 'Chip is one of us. He grew up in London just like us and he’s executing his dreams and trying hard to be a good person.'
I didn’t write my F64 for people to say, 'Chip’s still got it' or 'Chip GOES IN!' I just wanted to get my message across of how I’m feeling and I have a great understanding that SB.TV’s F64 series is a place where people check to hear a good lyric and just to hear someone MC really well. I have a lot to live up to from my first F64, so I just wanted to properly execute how I am feeling now and I think it really worked. I appreciate every single person that is acknowledging it and noticing my wordplay and my general credibility, confidence and performance skills – I proper appreciate it. I think that if you read those lyrics on paper, it would be just as impressive as how I executed it.
Going back to the mixtape, I didn’t make 'Spazzz.com' for press or for radio, I just put it out directly to and for my fans so that everyone can hear what I do best – just MCing! I’ll probably put out a couple more online virals for the mixtape as well, and then I wanna start my third album. There’s gonna be an interesting story coming with my third album - which I can’t wait for everyone to hear - but I can’t really announce it right now.
So, #TeamChip, stay tuned and thank you for all of your support so far. I’m still working hard, still trying to get better as an artist and still trying to push it to new levels. We’re a unit, we’re united and the C.M.A.R uniforms are gonna unite us even more, so that we can bump into someone that’s got a C.M.A.R uniform on and we can be like, 'Yeah, straight love.' I appreciate all my fans, I love you all so much and we just gotta keep this thing rolling...
