Uk Focus With Dj Limelight
Welcome to another instalment of The Wrap Up’s UK Focus with myself, DJ Limelight, where I give you an insight into my world over the last few weeks, focusing on big underground releases, new artists and ones to watch!
The UK urban scene has seen some bright sparks in 2014, with another massive release courtesy of grime legend Ghetts aka Ghetto aka J.Clarke titled 'Rebel With A Cause'. UK rappers are starting a trend working with US rappers, and this month has seen the official video release for the single 'UK To The States' by North-West London rapper Mad Money featuring Gunna Dee and US rapper Lil Durk. With my ears firmly on the ground, this month’s Ones To Watch comes from the trap scene - a production duo called Stööki Sound.
Legendary UK MC Ghetts saw his album 'Rebel With A Cause' land a very impressive number 23 in the Official UK Albums Chart this week, without any major label backing. With over 10 years in the music game, Ghetts has seen previous CD releases gain great success and been involved in some of grime’s biggest clashes despite never really adapting to the commercial scene. His lead single 'Rebel' gave an insight to what was expected from the album with the usual hard-hitting Ghetts, but a more grown approach with the live element in his music.
After speaking to Ghetts this week, it seems he has found his niche; focusing on his loyal, outspoken fan base, teaming up with a great media group in Disrupt and delivering a masterpiece of an album.
My standout tracks on the LP include 'Gas Mark 9' featuring Giggs, 'Man Like Me' featuring Rapid, which delivers that legendary Ruff Sqwad grime sound in the production and 'Rags' which continues the live element throughout the CD, but still brings that gritty flavour in drum patterns, tempo and skippy flows. This is a definite purchase for your digital devices; check it out on iTunes now.
UK TO THE STATES
Back in January 2014 I was sent a song by North-West London rapper Mad Money. The track featuring Gunna Dee and Lil Durk titled 'UK To The States' caught my attention and has since gained support from various DJs across the UK and now in the US. The link up with Lil Durk fits the track so well. Hard productions and the sort of track that would ring bells in the clubs, Mad Money has certainly opened his own doors, gaining a lot of attention in the UK and across the pond. Speaking to the North West London resident, future projects seem to be coming thick and fast and what interests me about him is his strong underground following in the US. Check out the latest video for 'UK To The States' HERE.
ONES TO WATCH
The trap scene has a very big following in USA and Europe but remains very underground here in the UK. A few odd nights here and there in Shoreditch, London, but shows upon shows and warm up slots for major acts across the world seems to be a common trend for trap producers. I came across Stooki Sound back in early 2013. Not realising they were in the UK at the time I was gassed off the 808s, clean cut, sharply edged productions by this production duo. To then realise they were in London was a big surprise, especially to see how much support they had built in the states and Europe.
The duo consisting of DJ Lukey and Jelacee are heavily influenced by grime, hip-hop and dance genres which make their sound even more so unique. Most notably, their biggest track to date was a collaboration with 17-year-old Brighton-based producer Hucci which has now hit over an impressive three million hits on YouTube. Check it out HERE.
A new EP release is on the cards in 2014 and the London production duo are playing all across Europe in the forthcoming months. Keep up to date with Stooki Sound on their Soundcloud page.
