Verbal Intercourse With Shabazz: Phony Ppl
They’re hardly able to buy liquor at their local corner store and play legally in most of the venues around the city, but this band's organic talent and wisdom strikes through every vocal and chord performed. Under their mysterious alias, Phony Ppl, the nine-piece collective – made up of in-house bedroom producers, rappers and vocalists, as well as a bassist, composer, guitarist, saxophonist and more – mesh together to create nostalgic and rare greatness...
With the wide range of musical influences, the Brooklyn youngsters smoothly blend the sounds of hip-hop and R&B, properly laced with jazzy and funky undertones. Can you imagine the rebirth of 90s neo-soul, created by a premature N.E.R.D. and The Roots, sprinkled with the massive hip-hop talents of J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Kanye West? Their name is Phony Ppl for a reason, my friends.
Everything is unreal and these talented cats want to share their world like Mary J. Blige. With the release of their long-awaited effort, 'Phonyland', the collective demand the musical youth and beyond on the floor, moving their dancing feet the way our ancestors grooved. Rough enough to feel the in-house production and mixing, yet just simply amazing, this audible effort is good enough to woe a young gal into giving up the whamz! There's no doubt the talent you are about to witness will not teleport into success soon.
For my latest episode of Verbal Intercourse, I got the all-round basis of the Brooklyn collective, as they all gathered in MaffYuu's basement – which is the usual Phony Ppl practice dojo. The boys won me over with their humour – which weaved in-and-out their natural-born chemistry – as they answered my questions.
