Wrap Up And Watch Out: Alexa Goddard
Earlier this week, we caught up with Birmingham’s rising star, C4. Today, we speak with the next UK R&B/pop to follow the likes of Jessie J, Yasmin and Katy B. Introducing Alexa Goddard…
Who are you…
Well, my name is Alexa Goddard and I'm 22 years old. I have wanted to sing for as long as I can remember and I’ve been singing, professionally, since I was about 14. Music is my passion and I love to write as well as sing. I’m currently in the process of writing and recording my debut album. I love all types of music, but my true passion is in R&B and soul, as well as adding a bit of a pop edge to my work, it is mainly R&B-influenced. A few months ago, my producer suggested we create a YouTube channel and start posting videos of me singing live, to share with the world. In September 2010, we posted a video of me singing a cover of the Keri Hilson remix of 'Turn My Swag On'. Within a month, we had reached over half a million views on the video and it currently sits at over 2 million views, giving my YouTube channel - AlexaMusicTv - a total of 5 million upload views.
There was a huge demand from viewers for 'Turn My Swag On' to be released commercially, as this version wasn't available to download or buy anywhere else. After a lot of hard work and weeks of dedication from my producer, we were finally able to release the song digitally for people to buy through my producer’s label. We had no idea that is would be such a success, but it went into the Official UK Top 40 at number 26 after its first week of sales, then climbed to number 20 in its second week. We then managed a third week in the Top 40 at number 27. The track also topped the indie chart and was number 2 in the R&B charts. It was the most incredible feeling to have a song in the charts and to hear it being played on the radio. Now I can't wait to do the same with my own material.
I grew up listening to the likes of Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey - four of the most incredible vocalists ever, in my opinion. It was those amazing artists that made me want to sing. I also love India Arie, her voice is perfection and her writing is truly inspiring and uplifting. She is so real and honest. Artists like Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway - the true soul greats - can't fail but to inspire. In terms of more modern artists; Christina Aguilera, Rihanna and Beyoncé are inspirations to me. What Jessie J is doing in the UK right now is amazing too!
My own album is a real mix of R&B with pop influences and a few up-tempo dance tracks. I've worked with some amazing urban producers and writers on the project and when it's finished, it will sound amazing. I can't wait for everyone to hear it. There's even going to be some extra special guests - I can't say too much about it yet, but expect some big names.
Plans for 2011 and beyond?
We’re hoping to finish and release the debut album in 2011. There are some exciting meetings in the pipeline and I'm hoping to work with some real credible writers and artists on the project too. There are some exciting collaborations in the pipeline as well – I’ve worked with London-based rap artist, Scorcher on an amazing track, which is out early this year and several other side projects. The experience has been great so far. My plans for this year are to work hard, but enjoy every second of it. My producer and I are a great team and we bounce ideas off of each other and feed off of each other’s ideas and imagination. I'm so excited to see what this year brings and I can't wait to share my own music with everyone, after having shared so many cover songs. I will continue to share videos on YouTube and Twitter and I'm looking forward to sharing my journey with everyone.
