Wrap Up And Watch Out: Charlee Drew
After touring with Skepta for the past year and preparing his EP 'You Did Me A Favour', Leicester-born artist Charlee Drew is ready to make an impact. The 21-year-old singer, songwriter, producer and all-round musical genius has received support from Ed Sheeran, Sway and Skepta to name a few. Charlee took the time out to talk to The Wrap Up's Kristian Galea about the power of promotion on social networking and what we can expect from his debut EP…
TWU: Hey Charlee! For those who don’t know about you - can you tell them about yourself and your sound?
Charlee Drew: That's the worst question because that's the one I always get stumped on! I would say my sound is pop with a hint of r&b... to be honest it has a hint of everything.
TWU: You have built a pretty strong following online. Would you say online promotion is the future?
Charlee Drew: 100%, because if the content is good on YouTube it will be seen, instead of going out and doing shows every night to a few people, you can just put it online and show it to potentially millions of people. Yeah, to be honest I just couldn't ask to be in a better place right now.
TWU: You have been compared to the likes of Conor Maynard; how do you feel about that?
Charlee Drew: I think people need to compare things, I think it's only a compliment to be compared to anybody who is successful.
TWU: Who are your own personal influences, musically?
Charlee Drew: I like big great voices; people like Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and Brian McKnight. There are also some great producers such as Fraser T Smith and Dr. Luke, I admire them from a songwriting perspective.
TWU: Who would be on your dream track?
Charlee Drew: My dream collaboration would be with a writer and I'd definitely have to go with either Dr. Luke or Fraser T Smith.
TWU: You have worked alongside Skepta and toured with him; how was that experience?
Charlee Drew: That was great! I pretty much did a whole year touring with him, we did Glastonbury and Radio 1 Live Lounge too. I was playing keys and singing and I also wrote a track on his album - everything I love doing. It was a great way to get a foot in the door of the music industry. That whole tour was crazy - that's all I can say!
TWU: Did you enjoy touring?
Charlee Drew: Yeah of course, playing live is the best part of it all for me; just waking up in a new city and seeing things I've never seen before. I like the touring aspect of it all. My favourite place is Brighton; it's got such a crazy vibe there. Other than Brighton I'd have to say Manchester.
TWU: Your EP is called 'You Did Me A Favour'... Did you go through a bad break up?
Charlee Drew: Everything is always inspired by something, whether you elaborate on your experiences or not, everything stems from something. I'm sure everyone has been in a relationship where at the time it seemed great but then you come out of it thinking 'it wasn't that great at all'. I think everyone can relate to that title. It's basically just an introduction saying ‘this is me and this is what you can expect from Charlee Drew'.
TWU: Finally, where would you like to be by the end of 2013?
Charlee Drew: By the end of 2013 my album should be out and things should be on the up!
