Wrap Up And Watch Out: Rio
Manchester based MC RIO has been making strides in the industry since he dropped his debut single ‘Narrow Roads’ back in 2010. The Wrap Up recently caught up with him ahead of his ‘Bottom to the Top’ show in Manchester to discuss his influences and future plans…
The Wrap Up: Let’s start by discussing your headline ‘Bottom To the Top’ shows – What can fans expect from the night?
RIO: They’re gonna be very high energy! The support acts I have are very diverse, it’s not just a grime (or) hip-hop night – I have a neo soul singer, an acoustic set, a reggae artist and some of the best dancers in the UK.
TWU: You’ve supported some major heads in the music industry, such as Nas and Rick Ross. How does it feel to be stepping out on your own?
RIO: This is a defining moment in my career! Previously [with Nas and Rick Ross] it was people buying tickets to see them, whereas now I know people are doing it to come and see me.
TWU: How important is it that you’ve managed to sell out a venue in your hometown?
RIO: Very important. I was going to move to London, but then I felt like I would be a small fish in a big pond, whereas here, I’m a big fish in a small pond!
TWU: When are you planning to bring the show to London?
RIO: I think by the end of the year I’ll be ready to headline my own show in London.
TWU: We’ve heard whispers of collaborations with both French Montana and Juelz Santana. What can you tell us about those?
RIO: The French Montana one is up in the air, it could still possibly happen. The Juelz Santana collaboration… the video has been shot. I flew out to Manhattan in February and it was pretty surreal!
TWU: Any UK collaborations on the cards?
RIO: Yeah, I’ve done the whole Misha [B] thing, and I’m speaking with a few people like Kozzie, Cameo and Scrufizzer.
TWU: Before we wrap up, who would you say are your current inspirations?
RIO: Kanye West, and in the UK, Wretch 32!
