Tiësto: ‘I Can’t Write Hits Like Calvin Harris’

Tiësto and Calvin Harris are both currently enjoying residencies at the Las Vegas nightclub Hakkasan.  He told us why he decided to take on Sin City.

 

“For me Las Vegas is the new Ibiza,” he began. “I’ve been to Ibiza for years and I was looking for a new challenge in my life and Hakkasan embraced it to have my own night there and it’s been going fantastic. 

 

“Since the opening night every week is sold out and people come from all over the world – lots from England as well actually!”

 

On why he thinks Las Vegas is such a draw for dance music at the moment he continued:

 

“It’s a lot cheaper than anywhere else, it’s a lot cheaper to fly there, to stay there and every DJ in the world plays there every week so there’s always a famous big DJ every week and the clubs look amazing.

 

“I think there’s so much other stuff to do in Las Vegas not just clubbing but also shows and entertainment and it’s a party town…you don’t go to Vegas to relax you go there to party and it’s the best party town in the world. It’s ‘The Hangover’ capital!”

 

Thrice ranked No.1 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ poll, Tiësto - real name Tijs Michiel Verwest – also commented on the success of rising star, and fellow EDC headliner Avicii, who currently has the UK’s No.1 single with Wake Me Up.

 

“He’s a super-talented DJ and producer. I’ve been playing with Avicii for years. Years ago he came with me to Ibiza and we did a UK tour together and I think he’s so talented that he can make a track like Levels and now Wake Me Up which is even bigger I think so I really enjoy how he grew in the EDM world – I think he deserves all the success he has.” 

 

He added: “I think it’s [Wake Me Up] a great track to listen to and its up there with a Rihanna track – its just an amazing song and it deserves to be No.1 – so its awesome for him.”
