Tinder Just Got Way More Gender Inclusive
About time too.
Tinder is taking a step in the right direction today after announcing a change to their gender identity options to help make swiping left and right way more inclusive, no matter how you identify.
From today, users in the USA, UK and Canada will now have 37 new gender options to choose from, which are being added to the traditional male and female options. The idea is, of course, to allow you to simply just be yourself on your quest for love.
This move to be more inclusive follows criticism of the app for being transphobic by only offering male and female options for users. As a result it meant that some trans users were being banned by the app after being reported for using the 'wrong' gender.
Trans male, trans female, transgender and gender-nonconforming are all among the new additions, which is great news all round.
Explaining the move in a post on their blog, Tinder said: "Every new person in your life expands your horizons in some way. Inclusion and acceptance drive this expansion, and we want Tinder to reflect the world that surrounds us every day."
They continue: "No one will ever be banned from Tinder because of their gender. We haven’t had the right tools to serve our diverse community in the past, but that changes today.
"In addition to this new feature, we are learning to be a better ally to transgender and gender non-conforming communities by allocating additional resources to our support team, which includes educating our staff about the challenges facing these communities."
It will be interesting to see how these changes evolve into the way you can filter matches but this is definitely a step in the right direction and we're EXCITED.
