Tom Cruise allegedly tried to save his marriage to Katie Holmes by flying her to Iceland to celebrate his 50th birthday.
The Top Gun star - who turned the big five-zero yesterday (3rd July) - is said to have accused Holmes of being 'heartless' after she snubbed his last-ditch attempt to stop the split, causing a huge row over the phone.
A source 'close' to the couple told Us Magazine: "He begged her to go to Iceland for one last try at reconciliation. She refused and a huge fight ensued.”
After the former Dawson's Creek actress turned him down, Cruise is said to have left Iceland - where he is shooting new movie Oblivion - to fly home to California.
His lawyer, Bret Fields, has since confirmed that Cruise is seeking joint custody of six-year old daughter Suri, stating: "Tactically we can’t say where Tom will file a divorce case and if he’ll be seeking joint custody of Suri.
"We are letting the other side play the media until they wear everyone out and then we’ll have something to say. It’s not Tom’s style to do this publicly. He is really sad about what’s happening.”
Holmes has since been spotted in New York, where her wedding ring was notably absent as she filmed a guest appearance on Project Runway: All Stars.
The Sun has also reported that Katie and Tom's marriage was 'doomed' due to his close relationship with Scientology leader David Miscavige - who was best man at their wedding.
An insider told the tabloid: "Miscavige and Tom are joined at the hip. Tom runs every important decision in his life by him.
“Tom really values his opinion and Katie often felt like she came in second place. When it became clear how much influence he had over her husband she knew she had to get away.”
According to The Mirror, Katie will reportedly receive "virtually nothing" from Cruise due to a prenuptial agreement, despite rumours that she was set to walk away with £14million.
