Tom Misch Shines At His Sold Out Village Underground Show – Live Review
Give Tom Misch a listen. You won't regret it.
Hands clasped out in front of him, Tom Misch is thanking people for turning up. “This is crazy,” the singer says. “This is crazy! Thank you so much.” Tom can hardly believe that he’s sold out the 700-capacity Village Underground (a former Victorian warehouse), but he’s earned it.
Despite still being in his early 20s and self-releasing all of his chilled, colourful, feel-good music, his tracks have been streamed well over 20 million times. He sold out his entire US Tour, and then sold out every date of his current European tour.
He’s doing ‘quite well’, this Tom Misch fella.
Standing in front of a setup including a violinist, bassist and drummer, (Tom was on vocals and lead guitar), Misch is wearing the same white KAYTRANADA t-shirt (99.9% might just be the best album released this year – don’t @ me) he wore in the ‘Crazy Dream’ music video.
Playing in front of a black canvas backdrop with splotches of white paint scattered across that resembled a map of the stars, Tom opened with ‘The Journey’. (Which, after being picked up by influential Los Angeles outfit Soulection, has racked up over 2.7 million plays on SoundCloud.) People were already whipping out their phones to film.
Back in September, MTV went to see Loyle Carner at KOKO. He blew us away in one of the year’s best gigs. Tom Misch, sadly, couldn’t join Loyle at that show. Carner didn’t have the same problem last night.
Loyle joined his friend for two songs, including ‘Nightgowns’ (can we have a Loyle x Tom album please?), but not for ‘Crazy Dream’. Oddly, Misch omitted the track, one of his biggest, from the set altogether. I can’t have been the only person disappointed not to hear it. Always play your biggest songs. It’s what people want to hear, right?
A little later, Misch played his cover (first uploaded to Soundcloud over two years ago) of Patrick Watson’s ‘Man Like You’ before Zak Abel came out to sing on ‘Beautiful Escape’ – being performed live for only the second time ever - from Tom’s Beat Tape 2, released in 2015. Tom Misch has a soulful voice, but it’s used relatively sparingly as he spends the majority of his time jamming on stage, a huge grin stretching across his face from ear to ear. He’s enjoying himself. It’s good to see.
Tom then brought out his sister Laura Misch for ‘Follow’ – who was greeted by chants from a massive two people of: “Double Misch / Double Misch / Double Misch”.
As Sam Wills and Barney Artist also joined Tom on stage, it seemed like Misch was pulling a never-ending reel of London-based artists out of his sleeve.
Tom Misch’s Village Underground headline show felt like a celebration of what the singer, songwriter, beat-maker and friend of every single London-based artist has achieved so far. He finished up on ‘Watch Me Dance’, from his summer Reverie EP; everyone in the crowd is moving. Tom Misch looks set for bigger and better things. Surely larger rooms lie just around the corner?
Keep your eyes peeled for that debut album. It’s coming.
