7 Reasons Raving in the Snow is an Absolute Bomb
Snowbombing Festival took it to the next level
It’s the type of idea you wish you had come up with; take an action-packed week on the slopes (already very alluring) and add a music festival full of incredible DJ’s and activities and you’ve got Snowbombing!
Dubbed ‘The Greatest Show on Snow’, this year marked the festival’s 20th birthday in the quaint ski resort of Mayrhofen in Austria. To mark the occasion, the festival kicked off with a street party that featured Fatboy Slim, Tom Grennan & the incredibly loud and lairy Sink The Pink.
This set the tone for a festival that often seemed to mix the big names of its line-up, with a sort of ‘lark about’ attitude. From the questionable fashion choices on the slopes to the taking over of a local butcher’s shop for a pop up party, means this should definitely be on your festival list for many years to come!
So what are some of the ways you can embrace your inner child/fun monster at Snowbombing?
RIDE TO THE MOUNTAINS IN A 150 CAR CONVOY!
One of the best experiences of Snowbombing takes place before you even set foot in the Austrian Alps! It’s a road trip that spans four countries in two days, and features a pack of 150 BMW’s (the official car sponsor) brimming with fancy dress festival goers, DJ’s and lucky competition winners.
The massive gallivant across Europe definitely gets you noticed, and features pit stops that include exclusive sets from some of the top names on the festival line up (this year it was London’s Tom Grennan).
To top it all off, road trippers are greeted with a massive procession party at the finish line in Mayrhofen to really kick the door down to the town’s residents to exclaim Snowbombing has arrived!
FORGET HOUSE PARTIES, TRY IGLOO RAVES
Picture the scene; the ski lift that closes at 4pm reopens just for you in the pitch black and (after a fairly thorough security frisk) you get in to a gondola that climbs through the mist to the top of a mountain where you get to drink vodka and rave in an igloo for four hours!
Mid-way through the set that featured Maribou State and James Zabiela, the heat and energy of the crowd appeared to produce occasional droplets from the igloo roof! This definitely didn’t stop anyone from going all out, and added a sense of exhilaration to this truly unique arctic-themed experience.
Oh, and for a much more chilled out crowd, the igloo offered yoga classes each day!
YOU HAVE TO SKI/SNOWBOARD TO MOUNTAIN STAGES!
Although there’s always heaps of things to keep you occupied down in Mayrhofen, why the hell wouldn’t you spend most of the day on the mountain??
Here you’ll find the funniest outfits (Mario & Luigi crashing in to each other down a black slope on the first day comes to mind instantly), visit the multiple stages that DJ’s can only access via Skidoo’s, and take part in the Ride & Seek competition billed as a ‘‘3 day snowpark pro-comp extravaganza on acid’’.
Mountain Park Terrace
This seemed to be the place to be for all out raves, loud speakers, Austrian beer, and all round good vibes! It was also the perfect spot to watch the pro’s hit the massive jumps in the snow park directly opposite.
For a completely different kind of vibe the Reggae Shack offered skiers and snowboarders the chance to put their boots up and listen to the music more likely to be heard on a beach rather than on top of a mountain!
IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT RAVING; SPEND TIME WITH YOUR GUILTY PLEASURES!
If you ever need rest bite from the hard hitting house and drum n bass music blaring everywhere you go, then the Fun Haus is where you end up (okay you could also hit the spa at the hotel, but you’re still at a festival right?).
The 80’s Radio 1 DJ Pat Sharp played a ridiculously cheesy set which featured singalongs galore, but the highlight here was definitely the Antarctic Monkeys who brought a whole lot of fun and lots of memories seeing the real band (much, much further back) at Glastonbury.
Seriously, just look at him! The ‘Alex Turner’ had the moves and the vocals to match the looks. One comment, plenty more tribute acts next year please!
NOT ALL SAUSAGE PARTIES ARE BAD!
Surely there’s nothing more Austrian than a Schnitzel?
Enter Hans the Butcher, a local legend who each year allows pop up parties take place in the middle of his butcher shop. You get the feeling that this man loves all of the attention, taking selfies and throwing out sausages to the crowd mid-way through a set.
This year featured DJ Yoda, Waze and Odyssey and a ‘retro’ IPod battle. It really is a surreal experience, with the DJ decks literally atop the meat counter, and people able to order beers as well as a whole rack of ribs over the counter!
MOUNTAIN AIR REALLY DOES CURE HANGOVERS
Another way to make you feel like you’re not just at a UK festival in the snow, is to get involved in Austria’s drinking culture – namely strong beer and schnapps!
According to local legend, if an Austrian farmer was to die and had no next of kin, the farmer closest to him would receive his/her land. Therefore, several cases of farmers poisoning each other spread throughout the country and nabbing their land.
We were therefore told you HAVE to look into your drinking partner’s eye before drinking to ensure they’re not poisoning you! It must be said, after 5 or 6 Schnapps the sensation is close to what it must be like to be poisoned! Here’s a little piece of advice; Don’t get drunk enough to miss the last ski lift at 4pm whatever you do!
FORGET BUNTING AND SCONES…THIS IS A STREET PARTY
The Snowbombing Street Party really puts things into perspective. It’s the moment the peaceful Austrian town in the mountains turns into a boozy pope visit, welcoming the road trippers, Fatboy Slim and a no thrills procession party.
This year’s theme was the 90’s, in the name of the ‘funk soul brother’, and also featured Tom Grennan, The Cuban Brothers Sink the Pink who offered nothing but flamboyant fun, which scared most of the locals back in to the sanctuary of their homes!
The key to this party (and the festival in general) is to not take yourself too seriously!
