Barbados: 15 Ways To Live It Up Like RiRi
MTV shares our top tips on how to be a badgal (or badman) in Barbados...
You don't need to have visited Barbados to know it's incredible.
The mere mention of the word conjures up images of sun, sea and Rihanna twerking with her BFFs. We followed in the footsteps of everyone's favourite Bajan badgal to bring you this Insta-worthy guide to living it up like a VIP on one of the world's most ridiculously gorgeous islands.
1. Travel in style
Channel your inner RiRi and accessorise your tracksuit, trainers and travel pillow with some oversized sunnies and a statement lip. You know… just in case you get papped at the airport (or, more realistically, to make sure you look good in that #takeoffselfie).
2. Stay Elegant
For a truly VIP experience, MTV recommends The House by Elegant Hotels, where RiRi herself has stayed. Located on the platinum west coast of Barbados, this secluded, adult-only property offers spacious and minimalist boutique rooms complete with your choice of private plunge pool or balcony.
Guests are welcomed with a complimentary jet-revival back massage on a private beachfront cabana and can enjoy daily champagne breakfast, afternoon tea and evening canapés on the open-air deck. Dreamy right?
3. Take it all in
Enjoy the view, relax and soak in the rays.
With Barbados’ miles of white sand and crystal clear water, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
4. Eat like a queen
Cuz what’s a holiday without uhmazzzzing food.
Elegant Hotels offers a wide range of unique dining experiences and offers a complimentary water taxi service to jet you to and from each property so you can sample them all.
Our favourite had to be Daphne’s Italian Caribbean restaurant right next door to The House, which has hosted an array of celebrity guests including Rihanna, Simon Cowell, Claudia Schiffer, Gerard Butler and many more. Inspired by Melissa Forde’s Snapchats, we sampled the famous lobster linguine and can report back that it is indeed DIVINE. If their clientele isn’t exclusive enough, we got to dine in our own private beach cabana. #royalty
MTV also recommends trying all the local favourites: Cou cou, flying fish, macaroni pie, salt bread, fish cakes (aka fish BALLS), breadfruit and a whole lot of hot pepper sauce. mHmmmmn.
5. Drink rum punch (and lots of it)
Cuz island life just isn’t complete without it.
A delicious cocktail with a recipe that’s super easy to remember: One of sour. Two of sweet. Three of strong and four of weak.
If you don’t drink, local drink Cumila is a refreshing alternative made with mint leaves, lemon, cucumber, agave and sparkling water.
6. Go on a rum shop crawl
Barbados is widely known as the birthplace of rum and its 1,500 rum shops are an integral part of Bajan history and culture, surviving over 300 years! ‘Lime like a local’ at some of the most popular watering holes across the island on the Tamtastic Rum Shop Crawl and Scenic Tour.
Tickets for the tour are £42 (US $55) per person, minimum 8 persons.
7. Get a taste for the local culture
Learn all about Bajan culture on the Elegant Island Tour which includes visits to Limegrove and St. Nicholas Abbey with lunch at Animal Flower Cave for £10 ($25 Bajan) excluding lunch.
By night, Oistins Fish Fry on a Friday is the place to be. Although most people come here for the fried fish, any local on the island will tell you this is the place to experience true Bajan culture and nightlife, and we like to party…
8. Rent out your own yacht
Turn up the dancehall, crack open the champagne, enjoy the view and ‘get hurt’ with friends until the sun goes down.
www.seaducedbarbados.com offers private yacht charters. prices available upon request.
9. Hire your own photographer
Or delegate documenting duties to your BFF, just like RiRi.
9. Swim with turtles
A truly magical experience fit for a queen.
10. Be adventurous
Most hotel packages in Barbados include free watersports packages so hop on a jetski, donut or banana boat…there’s no excuse not to give it a go.
Just remember to take out travel insurance.
11. Learn the lingo
Our faves below:
Cheap tings nuh good = Beware when things come too easy
Dead man can't run from he coffin = It is impossible to run from your responsibilities
Don't tek a six for a nine = Do not misunderstand a person's real intentions
Don't rush de brush and throw away de paint = Do not allow haste to create problems for you
De higher de monkey climb, de more 'e show 'e tail = The more you show off, the more your faults are brought to the open
Leh we fire one = Let's have a drink
Yuh got plaster fuh evah sore = You have an answer for everything
12. Hang out in a cave?
13. Go fishing
Our catch vs RiRi’s…
14. If all else fails, chill
Nothing beats some peace and quiet with the company of a good book.
That awkward moment when you lose your book in your hotel and ask reception if they’ve found it… but can’t bring yourself to say out loud what you’re reading.
15. Plan your next trip
Cuz’ if it’s your first trip to Barbados, it sure as hell won’t be your last.
