Why You Should Put Down The Jäger And Become A Freestyle Skiier at LAAX, Switzerland
LAAX, the home of freestyle
The snobbish resorts and gingham tablecloths are FINALLY over!
The winter resort of LAAX is the five-time consecutive winner of the ‘Best Swiss Ski Resort’– and rightly so! It has modernised the concept of skiing with its high-tech facility and freestyle culture. The laid-back resort is the mecca for freeskiing and snowboarding with the world’s largest halfpipe and four snow parks. It’s hard not to feel inspired to strap on a helmet and attempt some kickers.
Better yet, LAAX is on its way to being the first 100% sustainable resort in the world. The Greenstyle foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting the local environment. Taking positive action to reduce waste, remove single-use plastic and investing in renewable energy. Heroes!
Fancy a bit of variety to your itinerary? Check out our must-dos whilst in LAAX.
Hit the slopes
From ski bunnies to park rats, there’s plenty to discover across the 224 km of pistes including sketchy glaciers and tons powdery forest runs - LAAX accommodates all levels.
LAAX has four snow parks but the halfpipe is the major attraction for most visitors. But don’t leave it to the pros cause you can teach an old dog new tricks! Book freestyle session to learn how to crush the SUPERPIPE and land some jumps. (We were basically pros within an hour).
Probably the quaintness activity EVER and an absolute must in LAAX! Dine at one of the mountain-side restaurants before racing your mates down the snowy piste. It’s cute AF.
Work and ski
Galaaxy Bridge is a modern co-working space for those workaholics. The unique mountaintop location means your lunch breaks are spent hitting the slopes... If only we could work remotely!!
Learn To Fly
Running off a mountain with a stranger strapped to your back isn’t for the faint-hearted. However, we do promise you won’t regret Paragliding once you’re soaring through the air.
Stay at Riders Hotel, the home of freestyle
Don’t be fooled by the Bond-villain exterior. The chic concrete walls and industrial structure is softened by the warm energy of locals and freestyle superstars hanging out in the lobby’s cocktail bar.
This hotel is all-singing all-dancing. Literally. Riders have live music every Friday and organise events for artists, foodies and music-lovers. Did we mention they have a yoga studio?
Riders’ glow up is worth a Google. Once known (ironically) as Riders Palace, it has since been revamped into the luxurious hotel you see today. They turned the dingy dormitories into spacious studio flats. The modern-minimalist rooms have a Nordic design detailed by hanging beds, natural materials and potted plants. We’re not sure if it’s the decor or people but it’s hard not to feel at home there.
Perks of staying at riders, other than all of the above. Riders is generated by 100% renewable energy and promise to produce zero waste.
WHERE TO EAT
Don’t worry, you won’t need to wonder far for a warm, hearty meal in LAAX.
The rustic mountain restaurant Foppa is renowned for Bündner specialities and Swiss dishes like gooey fondue. PS the only way down is on a sledge!
Caffè NoName is the hub of the free ski and snowboard scene… AND serve the best paninis on the mountain. For those into the halfpipe, grab a deck chair on the sun terrace and watch riders get tricky.
Stalla Alp Nagens
Stalla Alp Nagens is a rustically renovated cowshed located deep within the mountain. The Stalla serves authentic Swiss dishes and by late afternoon has a great aprés vibe - the ideal place for a boozy lunch!
Ella is an open plan restaurant with a cosy living room vibe and an organic-based menu to match. It’s the perfect spot for a chilled dinner with friends.
Riders is the first vegetarian restaurant in LAAX. The à la carte transforms seasonal, organic products into insta-ready dishes.
WHERE TO DRINK
There’s plenty of bars to unwind after a day on the mountain, whether it's a moody-lit lounge or a lively aprés bar - LAAX has got you covered.
The wild Indy Bar is rammed with Jäger fuelled skiers letting loose after another awesome day on the slopes. Cause have you really been skiing if you haven’t danced to tacky techno music? HELL NO!
The Summit Bar is a winter wonderland to retreat with friends and enjoy a few glasses of local wine. Not tired after closing-time? See below.
It’s the place to sleep, eat AND PARTY. The underground club is popping-off most nights of the week and hosts world-renowned DJs on the regs.
1. The Inside LAAX app is the perfect companion for booking passes, checking snow conditions and tracking you and your friends’ activities.
2. Reserve a room at the back of the building overlooking the Forrest. The footfall on the street can get a little noisy.
3. If you’re taking the train from Zürich airport, it’s best to print all the platform information to ensure a smooth transfer.
