Troian Bellisario Based Her Pretty Little Liars Accent On The Only Way Is Essex

An unbelievable slice of trivia.

In all the batshit plot-twists that Pretty Little Liars has sprung on viewers over the years, the grand finale in which A.D is revealed to be Spencer Hastings' secret twin probably takes the cookie for being the absolute wildest.

But it wasTroian Bellisario's accent as British bartender Alex Drake that really blew people's collective minds. It's now been revealed that that showstopperol' cockney lilt was actually based on T's compulsive viewing ofThe Only Way Is Essex.

According to Troian, she learnt how to master that distinctive British tone by regularly tuning into ITV2 and watching Megan McKenna and co. soaking up the usualshedload ofdrama in Brentwood.

"I knew that I was really interested in an “Essex sound.” I wanted her to be an Essex girl," Troian said in an interview with Vulture."I eventually I found this reality show calledThe Only Way Is Essex. It’s pretty much theJersey Shorefor the U.K.

"It’s reality TV, so the characters are very dramatic and very outlandish and very funny and very brash," she continued.

Arguing that there's actually something sort of beautiful about the way Gemma Collins enunciates her words, Troian said:"I saw a musicality in the way they spoke — the slang and the way that they related to each other. So I was like, “I don’t know, this sounds like Alex to me.” So the voice was actually based off that reality-TV show."

MIND. BLOWN.
