"Let our bodies intertwine/ But always understand/ That everything ends," Gibbard sings in the chorus of Equinox, which could easily be a line said by Edward in the film.
But Gibbard said that the tune is more about his personal life than Stephenie Meyer's fictional world.
"The song at its core is just about meeting another halfway, because life is very short, because there's only a brief period of time to really connect with people, and that it's important to recognize that," he said (of course, for Edward and his kind, life isn't that short).
"I just wanted something that kind of tonally matched the story and the scenes within the film, so they could kind of be put alongside but not be telling a narrative you're watching on the screen."
New Moon opens in theatres on November 20, while the soundtrack (which is rumored to feature contributions from Muse, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and Bon Iver, among others) will be available October 20.
