13 Of The Best Scares At Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights
Halloween fans - this is your ultimate dream destination. Or should that be nightmare...?
if Halloween is your fave day of the year then Universal Halloween Horror Nights is your ultimate dream – or should that be, nightmare?
Each evening through October, the magical Universal Studios Florida resort reopens, transformed into a horror fan's paradise.
Halloween fans who make the pilgrimage enjoy the sun-soaked fun of the world’s most badass theme park - and by night, a spooktacular night of scares, nine (NINE!!) stunning built horror mazes, incredible horror movie tributes, scare-actors and a whole lotta screams. And we can confirm it’s the most horrific place on Earth. IN THE BEST WAY.
Each maze – some based on our fave movies and telly, others original to the park – has you screaming and running in fear and holding on to strangers out of pure survival instinct as professional scare-actors do their best to scare the bejesus out of you.
Here are our ultimate TRIED-N-TESTED scares lurking inside the park that would spook even the biggest Halloween fan…
1. Dodging Michael Myers’s Knife in Halloween: Hell comes To Haddonfield
If you’ve ever wanted to be chased by Michael Myers: 1) You need professional help 2) you’d like it at Universal Studios. The maze, based on the second movie in the classic horror series, is as chilling as that iconic Shatner mask and takes you from his escape at the end of the first movie through his town to the terrifying finale.
2. Running Away From Screaming Chainsaws in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
You know what’s scarier than seeing Leatherface running towards you with a chainsaw?
HEARING Leatherface running towards you with a chainsaw.
The echoes of chainsaws rip out from this maze and out into the park. And yes, the sound of chainsaws by your head will scar themselves on your brain forevs.
3. American Horror Story’s Creepy Ass Rubber Men
The AHS maze is any fan’s actual dream. The maze walks you through three of the show’s most popular seasons IRL: Murder House, through to Freak Show and ending in Hotel.
Murder House has you run into a red room of rubber men straight outta the show’s iconic posters – and the latex-ed up dudes are hanging from the ceiling and standing in the room, mannequin-style. Of course, one of them will jump out at you. OF COURSE.
4.American Horror Story’s Creepy Ass Burned Family
The attention to detail in these mazes is really incredible. And if, like me, you love AHS’s first season, you will appreciate the extra detail of pyro-disfigured neighbour Larry Harvey’s scorched fam. Rushing past them in the horror maze is super creepy.
Universal also offer lights-on 'Behind The Screams' VIP tours so you can see the mazes in the daytime without any actors jumping out at you – and without your eyes being scrunched close in fear. And it turns out the burned family are actually less scary in the day. For the evidence, please see our tea party:
Would’ve been nice if the milk wasn’t burned.
5. American Horror Story’s Creepy Ass CHILD OF GAGA
When make it past the bearded ladies of AHS Freak Show and through the iconic elevator doors to AHS Hotel, you will be faced with LOADS OF SCARY GAGAS. (Sidenote: Universal Studios have hand picked some of the best Lady Gaga-alikes in the country and the likeness is scary-accurate).
But what’s more terrifying than The Countess coming at you is her SPAWN OF SATAN child just chilling in its crib. TBH, words can’t describe the horror of the thing. Just look at it:
On the bright side, the hotel was also complete with an Evan Peters-alike, so it’s not all gross!
6. Being Utterly Surrounded By Walkers EVERYWHERE With The Walking Dead
The pinnacle of The Walking Dead’s maze – which walks you all the way from iconic scenes from season 1 through to season 6 - has you run in fear into –and through- a room FILLED WITH WALKERS. Literally everywhere. And mirrors. So that it looks and feels like there are EVEN MORE WALKERS SURROUNDING YOU. Delightful.
Some are mannequins, some are actors ready to freak you the f*ck out. But honestly they’ll all do that regardless.
7. Coming Face To Face With Actual Kong Head On Skull Island: Reign Of Kong
Skull Island: Reign Of Kong is the incredible new 3D experience ride at Universal’s Island Of Adventure. It’s awesome. And if you want a scare during the day at the theme park – WE RECOMMEND.
Before I got on the ride, it had stopped a moment while someone had to get off. As the previous riders pulled in to disembark, the operator said ‘sorry about the stop, folks!’ to which a man shouted from his seat ‘WE WERE IN THERE WITH A GIANT GORILLA HEAD. IT WAS TERRIFYING.’
When it was my turn to witness Kong myself, I knew the terror. Come face to face with a hyper realistic gigantic gorilla at your peril.
8. Going Inside Regan’s Mind In The Exorcist
Regan sure has a lot going on in there. Which makes The Exorcist maze’s concept totally wild – a maze inspired by INSIDE the Exorcist’s iconic character’s mind. Eek! Highlights include live actors as Regan thrashing around on her bed, FLOATING Regan and a shocking spider-style Regan that falls down the stairs toward you when you LEAST EXPECT IT.
9. And Inside Her Grim-As-Hell Bed Sheets
Universal Studios’ mazes are totally sick. In multiple ways. Like this, a room full of green barf-covered mattresses inspired by Regan’s vom. Forensic Scientists even supplied Universal Studios with the exact chemical smell of sick to pump into the room like Febreze. Mmmmm lovely.
10. Being Terrified Literally Everywhere Thanks To The Park’s Scare Zones
THERE IS NO ESCAPE. At HHN, leaving the horror mazes does not mean peace and quiet from the scares. Outside, the park is transformed into ‘scare zones’ – where scare-actors haunt the park and its guests. Our faves had to be the 1950s Americana high school-going undead teens. Yay for scary football players!
11. Being Shot Out Into The Sky On The Hulk
The Hulk coaster in the Marvel area of Universal’s Island Of Adventure is one of the best IN THE WORLD – and it’s just been completely refurbed with an all-new sleek track. It’s quick and massive and if you don’t scream like an idiot while being shot out into the sky at high speed then you’re dead inside.
12. Being Creeped Out At Christmas From Krampus
If you like your scares a little more kitsch, the horror-Christmas-themed maze will deliver the fright! Based on the 2015 movie, Krampus is the alternate Father Christmas who preys on the bad children who won’t be getting their nice pressies this year. This maze takes you inside a home visited by him at Xmas… and a glimpse of the scariest gingerbread men you’ve ever seen.
13. Falling Into The Depths Below A T-Rex
Is there any better scare than the sight of a T-Rex breaking into your calm river adventure and sending you down a terrifying drop into its watery depths? Cool off from the Florida sun here: the Jurassic Park ride at Universal Studio’s will always and forever be one of our fave screams.
