WHO IS SHE?.................(written for TRACE MAGAZINE)

(Posted 20/02/08)

A ghetto celebrity isn't always the drug lord.
she isn't always locked up or all about money and gold. Sometimes she's just an average person with above-average potential. She's got to
be gifted with skills that can’t be measured by degrees of education. It's determination that makes her successful, but it's London that has made her a hustler....like Jasmine Dotiwala--a woman who combines the spirit of can-do with the experience of know-how.

Charm, toughness, sophistication, experience, vision. These talents overflow in the person of Jasmine Dotiwala, and she needs every ounce of them for her local and global assignments. Shaped by her African and Indian roots, her iron will, scrappy self-determination and irrepressible optimism has enabled Ms. Dotiwala to make history, change and progress. There’s no use in trying to butter it up. Trying to keep up with this tireless Renaissance woman is like eating a whole loaf of bread with nothing to drink. Writing, directing, producing and presenting – Jasmine is MTV’s leading hyphenate. If you had to sum up the career of this superfly sistah in one word, it would have to be “tenacious.” If you were granted two, tack on “resourceful.”

Her hard-earned corporate chair gives her a lot of cultural influence. Check the credits as they roll on some of your favourite programmes: that’s Jasmine’s stamp on Jay-Z’s Tour Diary; Usher’s Making of the Video ‘Yeah’; Diary of Snoop Dogg; Essential Mariah Carey; and Shady Family Invade Europe to name but a Fantastic Five. Whether its presenting on MTV News or as European series producer of MTV Cribs, Jasmine effortlessly moves from one programme category to another, epitomizing television’s boundary-breaking impulse.

This selfish business could use more like J.D. – glamazon women on some never-say-die shit. She breathes the game like a Just Blaze classic. With a lightening quick mind, wit and wisdom to match, her advice to young people – in print, on radio and industry seminar panels – always proves to be wise and insightful. Keeping up her furious work pace, juggling artists, arseholes and agendas, this proud B-girl is now on the A-list. Some say she’s arrived. They underestimate her journey.

Jasmine Dotiwala, ageless, Senior Producer/Presenter/Director, MTV News International

Daily Operations: Dodging Dr Time as we fight for minutes 24-7.

Favourite Teacher: My old ballet teacher Miss Crouch, who was still kicking, splitting and leaping at the age of 70.

Favourite Book: The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra

Money is: what I use as a last resort when I can't get something for free

Power is: available to those who have the balls to take it

Words of Wisdom: It is better to aim for the stars and miss, than to aim for the shit and hit.
