Vybz Kartel Hit With $15Million Fine
Plus, the dancehall star has also been slapped with new legal charges...
Dancehall star Vybz Kartelmay be facing drug and murder charges from two previous arrests, but a Supreme Court judge has now ordered him to pay $15million to remedy a 2009 infraction.
According to The Gleaner, the damages were the result of a breached contract, when Vybz Kartel - real name Adidja Palmer - failed to perform at a concert in the Turks and Caicos Islands in August 2009.
Jamaican promoter Alton Salmon claimed that some of the tickets for the event were offered at a pre-sale. As a result, there was a riot at the venue, which he says caused him to suffer monetary losses as well as blows to his reputation.
Salmon was awarded $127,736 for the loss of profit, in addition to the pending $15 million in damages.
Still, the monetary woes are the least of Kartel’s troubles, as he is currently facing two murder charges. He has been granted bail in the case regarding the murder of Barrington Burton, but he’s unable to temporarily go free because of the unresolved murder case of Clive Williams.
Kartel is also said to have been slapped with a new charge of conspiracy to pervert the court of justice.
An artist named Gaza Slim (real name Vanessa Sandler) told police that Williams assaulted her during a robbery five days after Kartel was charged with his murder, and the two are being charged with making up the story to help Kartel’s defense.
Rumours last month suggested that Kartel had broken out of prison in his native Jamaica, but the reports were later rubbished by The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Les Green.
