Somerset House: We Are Scientists
LIVE REVIEW: Our new girl Laura caught the indie band and support Fight Like Apes live in London...
Geek Chic " ya got to love it! What really aids a bit of geek chic is if the said geeks are pretty darn toothin good musicians too. Brooklyn Indie threesome We are Scientists have a certain were so uncool we just may be cool aura about them and as they belted out their tracks in front of a rapturous crowd on a warm July evening to their fans they could do no wrong. The only problem is the repetitive feel of the set with each tune blending almost too seamlessly into the next. However, the throng of WAS fans- with the striking backdrop of Somerset house- sang along to songs from their major label records With Love And Squalor and Brain Thrust Mastery as well as a few oldies. Lead Singer Keith The teeth Murray and his bandmate Chris Cain, who arrived onstage in matching shirts and slacks, had their usual geeky banter. Keith said Were on Fire today and then the boys proceeded to argue if On Fire was in fact a measure on the metric system... Theyre lucky theyre pretty! Murray also told the crowd that they were doing some of the best moshing hed seen in a long time... hmmm he mustnt have been getting out lately. Nevertheless, hit The Great Escape seemed to be the high of the night and there was indeed some decent moshing. Recent singleAfter Hours was also very well received. A band to watch out for was support Fight Like Apes whose energetic performance saw the keyboard player attack the lead singer, throwing her to the ground. At first the crowd didnt know what to do but the Irish foursome soon won them over with their unique performance and catchy tunes such as Lend Me Your Face and Jake Sommers (named after a guy from 90s TV show California Dreamin). At the end of the gig I even overheard audience members say they preferred Fight Like Apes performance to We are Scientists. Maybe the boys should try a bit of fisty cuffs in future.
