What You Missed In Music: will.i.am On Why ‘The Voice’ Winners Flop, Free The xx Tickets & More
Also, Bon Iver have cancelled their European tour. Cry.
Will.i.am explains why every ‘The Voice’ winner has flopped:
Winners of ‘The Voice’ haven’t really fared too well when it comes to ‘selling records’ and ‘being remembered by anyone’. Previous winners of the talent competition have, undeniably, failed to make a considerable impact. But why?
will.i.am, one of the coaches on the talent show, believes this is because, as Digital Spy reports, of song choices and label support.
"I think it boils down to song choice and that's one of the real reasons why we haven't seen a superstar from the show, because the songs that they've been singing have been like, 'Whatever'," he said.
"And that's one of the reasons why I really feel Polydor in the mix is going to help change that because getting the right songs for the artist is important."
Moving from BBC to ITV isn’t the only major change (apart from new faces on the coaching panel) for ‘The Voice’. The show’s winner will now receive support from record label Polydor, instead of Universal Records.
Will.i.am has worked with Polydor for 15 years now, and had nothing but good words to say about the label: "I just go back to my experience. Every time we would have a new record we would sit down and come to Polydor and play the music for the team and they would help us pick the single.”
"That's the care and attention that Polydor put into this scenario that this show has been missing, so I'm really, really excited that we have great partners that are going to help bring a star."
