Are The Smiths The World’s Weirdest Siblings?
In a nutshell: yes.
The siblings Smith have given their first joint interview to T magazine. It’s a pretty highbrow publication, so Willow and Jaden thought they’d try and rise to the occasion by answering questions in a manner that would confuse even the sharpest knives in the cutlery drawer.
Some of what they say seems like brilliance, intelligence beyond their years- 14 and 16, respectively. Their 'knowledge' manifests itself in subjects that someone even triple their age would have no clue about.
The rest of it, however, seems a touch insane, like nonsense picked up by listening to a conversation had by people who’ve no idea what they’re talking about.
What plays out is a conversation The Guardian have sagely called a game of “Bull*** Tennis”. We've picked out some highlights below, because the whole interview is guaranteed retina-puncturing.
Jaden Reads Things That Are Older Than History Itself
To the question ‘What Are You Reading’, Jaden replied: “ancient texts; things that can’t be pre-dated.”
Willow Is A Time Lord
"I mean, time for me, I can make it go slow or fast, however I please, and that’s how I know it doesn’t exist."
The ‘Melancholiness Of The Ocean’ Is A Recurring Theme In Jaden’s Work
Deep. Real deep.
What Is The Opposite Of An Apple?
Jaden: “When you think about an apple, you also think about the opposite of an apple. It’s a tool for understanding mathematics and things with two separate realities.”
I Whip My Hair Was A Big Moment For Willow
“I mean, “Whip My Hair” was a great thing. When I look back I think, “Wow, I did so much for young black girls and girls around the world. Telling them that they can be themselves and to not be afraid to be themselves.”
Willow Likes Her Own Books Better Than Others
“There’re no novels that I like to read so I write my own novels, and then I read them again, and it’s the best thing.” BOLD.
Things Are Better When They're Together
Sweet like chocolate is the sound produced when J+W pair up. “As good as chocolate tastes, it sounds that good.” Which must be pretty good, unless it’s the 30p own-brand stuff that frankly tastes like sawdust.
Climbing Trees And High Fashion Don’t Mix
Willow: “I like to go to places with my high-fashion things where there are a lot of cameras. So I can just go there and be like, “Yep, yep, I’m looking so sick.” But in my regular life, I put on clothes that I can climb trees in.”
