Jay-Z Treats Yahoo! Wireless Festival To First MCHG Live Performance
REVIEW: ...as JT returns last night's favour...
Day 2 of the Yahoo!Wireless Festival promised to be a scorcher, and we're not just talking about the mercury, the talent on stage was to die for and Jay-Z performing tracks from his Magna Carter Holy Grail album live on stage for the first time certainly delivered.
Feeling: The highly anticipated act everyone had been waiting for had finally taken to the stage. Spirits were high, and strong aromas (not dissimilar to Snoop Dogg's dressing room) filled the air. The king of rap, Mr Carter had stage presence like no other, keeping the crowd of 60,000 completely engrossed whilst chanting every word.
The Look: Sporting a MASSIVE gold chain that is probably worth more than all the equipment in the MTV News studio combined, Jigga kept it casual with a short-sleeved white shirt and dark cargo pants.
Tunes: Tonight was buzzing not only because Jay-Z was on UK soil once again, but we had a brand new LP of tracks to lap up. Starting with a Public Service Announcement, the audience lapped up Hov's hits including Hard Knock Life, 99 Problems, Run This Town, Encore, GOOD Music's Clique and even his features on Mrs Carter's Crazy In Love and Bonnie & Clyde '03 while the new MCHG material Tom Ford, Crown, Somewhereinamerica and Picasso Baby felt like we'd known them all along.
Special Guests: It's clear this weekend is all about the double act that is Jay-Z and JT! After Hov cameo'd on Suit & Tie during Justin Timberlake's Friday headline set, the former NSYNC star returned the favour last night to close Jigga's show with MCHG's title track Holy Grail. Needless to say the decibel level from the crowd skyrocketed as Justin appeared on stage, clad in a suit and T-shirt, donning a red cap.
Banter: It wasn't long until Jay told the huge crowd he could "feel the love" and thanked everyone who'd bought his new LP Magna Carter Holy Grail.
Boasting it was No.1 in 59 countries, he also reminded us that MCHG was (unbelievably) the first album of his incredible career to top the UK chart. Deserved and ridiculously overdue, don't you agree?!
"I had a beautiful time" he said before the start of his penultimate track Encore, as he pointed fans out of the crowd to thank them personally.
And after Encore, Jay joked he should now leave the stage but he was too excited to be joined by his fellow Legend of the Summer.
Celeb Spots: Jay-Z certainly attracted the hottest celebs this weekend. In his compound his A-list friends kept him company before he took to the stage. Rita Ora and Macklemore made an early exit from the compound to join the Magna Carta rapper backstage. Rita's man, Calvin Harris was also behind the scenes after his own set. With Beyonce on tour back home it was a shame Mrs Carter couldn't be here for her man's big moment but JT's other half Jessica Biel was on hand to support her hubby for his impromptu appearance with Jay Z!
Sweat Factor: With the sun setting on London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park after a sweltering day in the sun, Jay-Z didn't need to give the tens of thousands of fans any more reason to sweat but his Hip-Hop catalogue saw everyone's energy levels through to the bitter end.
Summary: Seeing Jigga live on stage reminds you you're in the presence of and urban legend. Jay's Magna Carter Holy Grail material went down well and after two teasers of the Yahoo! Wireless headliners performing together we think we're in for a big night tonight.
Encore, do we want more? Always.
