World's First Successful Penis Transplant Carried Out

South African man gets new manhood following 'botched circumcision'...

Men, you might want to cross your legs while reading this story.

It has been reported by BBC News that a surgical team in Cape Town, South Africa, has carried out the world's first successful penis transplant operation.

The 21-year-old recipient, who has not been named for obvious reasons, was 18 when his member was mangled in a "botched circumcision".

Since then he had been left with just a 1cm stump - until the nine-hour operation to attach a donated penis (we're not sure we want to know where from).

A team in China had attempted a penis transplant before, but unfortunately the organ was rejected afterwards.

However the South African man is now able to urinate, have an erection, orgasm and ejaculate normally.

One of the surgeons involved, Andre Van der Merwe (who normally carries out kidney transplants) told the BBC: "This is definitely much more difficult, the blood vessels are 1.5 mm wide.

"In the kidney it can be 1 cm."

Some of the techniques used were initially developed for face transplants.
