WWE: Daniel Bryan Reveals First Ever Beard Was Endorsed By A Japanese Wrestling Legend
Daniel Bryan intended for there to be a whole chapter of his new autobiography dedicated to explaining his affinity for beards.
Speaking exclusively to MTV UK, the 34-year-old star told the tale of how his first facial fuzz came to be - and how his initial hairy look was endorsed by a Japanese wrestling legend.
"The first time I actually grew a beard, I started it in 2004,” revealed Bryan.
"And what happened is I went over to Japan and come back and I’d left my razor in my hotel room. And razors are ten dollars! Ten dollars may not be a lot of money… but it kinda is a lot of money, for a razor.
"I kept putting off buying one! And finally, right before my next Japan tour, I was going to shave but was a bit lazy and put it off until I got to Japan.
“When I got there, Jushin Liger remarked on me growing a beard and he said it made me look older. I was 23 at the time and in Japan they like their American wrestlers to look a little rougher, and so I literally just stopped shaving entirely.
“Then I came over to England in 2005 and I was doing the All Star Wrestling shows with Brian Dixon. As part of that he wanted me to wear a mask – but a mask along with the beard wasn’t working out too well.
"And my sister got married that year too, and she politely asked me to shave before her wedding! After that, I’d randomly have a beard here and there because I hate shaving."
Mighty beards grow from little whiskers, indeed.
Despite being out of action with a concussion-related injury since April, it is clear there are many more chapters yet to be written as part of Bryan’s story. But what would he call the next volume of his autobiography?
The grappling ace admits to being temporarily stumped - before coming up with the perfect title.
"This is the thing, when you guys are interviewing me about my book your questions require a whole load more thought than usual!” he jokes.
"Thinking a little out of the box here, it’d probably be called 'Yes 2'!
