WWE Slammy Awards 2014: Roman Reigns Beats John Cena, Brock Lesnar & Daniel Bryan To Win Superstar Of The Year Gong
Powerhouse superstar looks set to move up the totem pole after Slammy win - and warns other senior figures he will be "stepping up"...
Roman Reigns seems set to move up to the next level in the WWE reckoning after winning over fans voting to recognize their favourite sports entertainment stars and moments from 2014.
Powerhouse Roman, 29, has been out of action since late September, after being forced to undergo emergency surgery on an incarcerated hernia.
But as he collected the final prize of the night of last night’s Slammy Awards on WWE RAW, the recuperating former Shield member made his headlining intentions clear, warning the company’s most senior figures: “I’m stepping up”.
Expected to return to in-ring competition on television soon, Roman’s Superstar of the Year win over the likes of current WWE World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar – who ended the Undertaker’s legendary Wrestlemania Streak before pummeling John Cena for the title – and Wrestlemania hero Daniel Bryan is being viewed as a huge endorsement of a talent senior management hope will soon become a main attraction for the company.
And although some fans on Twitter questioned how Reigns could lose out to former partner Dean Ambrose in the Breakout Star of the Year stakes only to emerge as the victor in the show’s stiffest category – which also included Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt – his support turned out, despite his injury lay-off.
Referring to his only other appearances on WWE programming since his op, Roman told the live crowd at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in South Carolina: “This ain’t satellite baby, this is the real deal here.”
”It’s not the brass ring, but it is pretty damn good and I love it,” he continued, holding up his Slammy trophy.
“It is a step in the right direction.”
He added: “Speaking of steps… stepping up… I don’t care if it is John Cena, Brock Lesnar, The Rock, Triple H or Vince McMahon himself – if you’re at the top of the stairs, I’m stepping up and you can believe that.”
