X-Men: Dark Phoenix Director Says The Movie Is Inspired By Thor: Ragnarok

Here's how the upcoming Sophie Turner-starring X-Men movie will be like Thor: Ragnarok...

Who remembers X-Men: The Last Stand? Vinnie Jones in a big rubber suit, shouting “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch”? Yeah. Well Simon Kinberg, the director of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, remembers it all too well, having served as a writer on the project. And he’s very, very sorry…

“I'm sorry for X-Men 3," said Kinberg. “We tried to tell the Dark Phoenix story and we didn't do it properly. So, with this Dark Phoenix story there is no 'cure' plot, there is no other plot. It is the Dark Phoenix story, as told in comics, as told in the cartoons. Sophie [Turner] is the centre of the film, that's why she's the one person that's in the teaser poster.”

And while this new movie will hopefully be miles apart from The Last Stand, it will look to another recent threequel for inspiration, in the form of Thor: Ragnarok. “It's a movie that goes into space and is cosmic, very much inspired actually by what [Taika] did with Thor,” says the director. “Even though the tone is totally different – just the ability to make a character movie that still feels grounded, and fun, but is in whole other universes.”

If it gets anywhere close to the fun we had with that movie, we should be in for a treat. Co-starring Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy, Dark Phoenix will open in the UK on 7 June 2019.
