The Original Zoella From Very First Viral YouTube Channel Lonelygirl15 Makes Surprise Return To The Internet after 'cult' induction. Read more and watch her first video in 8 years at MTV.co.uk
Way, way back when Zoella was still just a twinkle in the internet’s eye, there was another YouTube channel that every 15-year-old was obsessed with.
Yep, if you can rewind your internet habits all the way back to 2006 then you might remember Lonelygirl15, the very first channel on YouTube to go viral and which - right after we all got totally and utterly hooked on it - turned out to be a massive hoax.
The channel featured chatty videos from Bree, who seemed just like a normal teenager. Well, except for the fact she claimed to be preparing to be inducted into a cult-like religion her parents were a part of, and who posted vids documenting the second thoughts she was having leading up to the big day.
Even after it was revealed that Bree was actually Kiwi actress Jessica Rose Lee and that these weren’t real vlogs but a fictional web series, the vids racked up a whopping 273 million views and became the most subscribed channel on the whole of YouTube in 2006.
But now, eight years on from the last video, Lonelgirl15 is back. A lot has happened in the interim years and from the sound of things, we’re in for a whole new look at her life in 2016 thanks to the weird new video posted on her account this week.
So what’s Bree into these days? Shopping, Instagram and Harry Styles? Err no – it seems like she’s a little too busy with life in the cult to be bothered with that sort of thing, as she explains in the new vid, hinting that there’s more what that came from too.
"When I was selected, I was terrified," Bree says in the video. "I wasn't sure if I wanted to go through with the ceremony. And my friends thought something would happen to me.
“Nothing happened to me. Everything is fine. I went through with the ceremony, and it was an honor, a privilege. I'm living proof of that."
Sounds a bit like a horror movie, doesn’t it? All we can say is that if you want to know what’s going to happen next, you’re going to have to keep watching.
