Behind The Scenes On Sprinkle of Glitter's Snow Queen Photoshoot With Photographer Linda Blacker
If you’re yet to discover the work of Linda Blacker then you are in for a total treat. With a history of creating fantastical fairytale photographs of your favourite YouTubers, her latest project features the one and only Sprinkle of Glitter as an ethereal Snow Queen with a pack of wolves for guards.
There’s no question that the resulting photos are all kinds of magical and not only have we got our hands on a few behind the scenes shots of Louise on set for you, but we also caught up with Linda to find out exactly what goes in to creating a whole new world inside her studio.
Hey Linda! The pictures are incredible. What was the story you set out wanting to tell with this set of photos?
Through a combination of imagery and a short narrative, this four part series tells my tale of the Snow Queen - played by Louise from Sprinkle of Glitter - who eternally guards the White Kingdom; an icy land, home to the 'Old Souls'. These are the spirits of deceased mythical creatures which have come to rest peacefully within their wolf vestiges.
Humans, in their pursuit of power and undying greed, are planning to invade the kingdom and harness the Old Souls. This photo set follows the Queen's reaction to this invasion and how she protects the realm.
Wow. How does the process for this kind of project work – do you start with a concept and then think about your model or vice versa?
I find that the process is always quite different. Sometimes an individual inspires me to create a character and on other occasions I come across someone who is suited to a character I've already imagined. Having worked with Louise before on a previous creative piece with 10 other Youtube stars, I was eager to invite Louise back into my studio and create a series that centred around her as the sole character.
On having this idea, the character that immediately came to mind for Louise was the Snow Queen, because she is a strong female role and has always been one of my favourite fairytale characters. For me, Louise's overall persona as a successful woman and role model for her young audience complemented the Snow Queen perfectly, and so the new photo shoot concept was born!
Is there something in particular that you want people to take a way from the piece?
From this series, I truly hope Louise and her audience have enjoyed seeing Sprinkle of Glitter reimagined as an iconic fairytale character.
My aim is to always tell a story in each photograph, whether in a series or solo piece. The most important part of photography for me is to always allow my audience to experience a powerful feeling of escapism. I want my viewers to have something more to dwell upon than just a beautiful scene.
The ‘wolves’ add an amazingly fantastical element to the pics but animals are notoriously difficult to work with. Was it a challenge to get the shots?
Myself and Louise are massive animal lovers, so it was a wonderful opportunity to work with these gorgeous 'wolves'! I absolutely adore working with animals on photo shoots, but I only include animals I know won't be stressed on set, so dogs are the perfect photo shoot stars! I have actually worked with these particular dogs before, as well as their owner Damian Sherman. Damian is always a pleasure to work with and absolutely amazing with his four wolves, which are of course in reality four Alaskan Malamutes. These pups go by the names of Tag, Paige, Velvet and Ruby!
Working with animals is highly entertaining, but it does mean the photo shoot takes longer. You do have to be extra patient and, although these Malamutes are very well behaved, every now and then dogs will be dogs and do exactly as they please. It creates a challenge, but that's what photo shoots are all about.
Fantasy seems to be really integral to a lot of your work – what it is about fantasy worlds that keeps you coming back for more?
I just love fantasy. Reading fantasy books and watching fantasy films are my favourite pastimes. A fictional world can be as beautiful as you want it to be and the possibilities are endless. The ideas can never stop when the worlds you imagine have no boundaries.
Do you have any golden rules/tips for people who really want to get into photography?
For aspiring photographers I believe its important to remember that someone will always have an opinion on your photography, whether positive or negative. Constructive criticism can be fundamental to growth, but at the same time you have to stay true to your ideas and creativity. If you believe in your images, then don't stop creating them! You have the potential to create incredible imagery in your own unique way already in the palm of your hands.
Thanks Linda, are there any thoughts you want to leave us with?
It was a true pleasure to photograph Louise, and I'm thrilled this photo series has been so well received. I'm excited to create more fantasy photoshoots for the online world to enjoy!
The brilliant Make Up Artists Paul Rodgers and Marc Zapanta brought their amazing skills to this photo shoot and helped me to bring the Snow Queen to life.
