Planning Summer With Zeds Dead
The EDM duo are like Nina Simone via Star Wars…

Zeds Dead are dividers of musical opinion. Champions of the North American ‘EDM Scene’, they make screw face inducing bass-heavy electro that has screwed up rule books and played a serious part in a reconsidered nation of music lovers. Signed to Diplo’s bountiful Mad Decent record label, MTV caught up with ZD ,to talk about their plans this summer.
MTV UK: Hi Zeds Dead. Where are you and what are you doing right now?
Zeds Dead: In LA. Just making some edits to songs for a festival we’re playing tomorrow.
MTV UK: The summer’s about to start - what are your plans?
Zeds Dead: We'll be on the road a lot this summer, especially in Europe. We'll be in the studio with the little time we have back home. Other than that I hope to get out to a lake with some friends, but we'll see if the schedule allows.
MTV UK: What do you think are going to be the top five tracks of the summer?
Zeds Dead: Well of course our song Lost You… I'm not sure really, I'll be listening to the Moody Good album.
MTV UK: What have you been working on recently?
Zeds Dead: We're just about finished a collab with Oliver Heldens. We've been working on a few remixes too, but can't say yet.
MTV UK: You’ve got an impressive roster of festivals coming up- which one are you most excited for?
Zeds Dead: We're really excited about Tomorrowland. Also the Mad Decent block parties are great and we’re really looking forward to playing lots of them.
MTV UK: What’s the worst festival you’ve ever performed at?
Zeds Dead: Somebody made a mini festival called the ‘Dubstep Music Awards’ a few years ago. So many big names were on it and hardly anybody bought tickets. I remember when we were watching our friend perform there was just us in the crowd.
MTV UK: MTV are going to be at Tomorrowland this year - what are three things we should definitely do when we’re there?
Zeds Dead: We honestly don't know; we didn’t explore at all the last time. This time we’re going to try and immerse ourselves in the experience. Maybe we can meet up and wander.
MTV UK: If you could curate your own music festival, who would be your headliners?
Zeds Dead: Eminem, Justice, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye, Daft Punk.
MTV UK: What’s it like having Diplo as a label boss? Is he someone you look up to?
Zeds Dead: He created a label that kind of has no rules. We can really make whatever we want, any genre. So he's a good label boss, but we don't think of him like that. He was influential in being an artist that could make any genre, and we strive for that, so you could say we've looked up to him in that regard.
MTV UK: Who do you think is making really exciting music right now?
Zeds Dead: Moody Good, Tchami, Mr Carmack, Hunter Siegel, Joe Ford, Phonat, Ape Drums, Kill The Noise, Crookers, Chocolate Puma and Dusky.
MTV UK: Describe Zeds Dead to an old person…
Zeds Dead: It's like Nina Simone, but imagine she's singing amidst a futuristic battle. That's a hard one.
MTV UK: What’s the last listened-to song on your iTunes?
Zeds Dead: Moderat - Let In The Light.
