Zedd: 'People Underestimate Justin Bieber’s talent'
‘Beauty & A Beat’ Producer spills on Gaga, Clarity and how to see the LIGHT...
Zedd is pigeon hole-proof. He tours as a club DJ but plays several instruments; he has a big sound and yet is understated in person, and at just 23 is the go-to producer for some of the biggest artists in the world.
Let’s start with the DJing as MTV News are in his Mandalay Bay hotel suite way above the Las Vegas strip, where in under 2 hours he must entertain over 3000 revellers 58 floors below him, here to see what the fuss is all about.
“I’m playing LIGHT tonight which is my residency here in Vegas. There’s LIGHT which is the nightclub then there’s Daylight which is a pool party and Eclipse which is the same spot at night. People are allowed to swim which is kinda cool. It’s gonna be awesome, [LIGHT is] the most impressive club I’ve seen.”
We’ve seen the gigantic billboards on the journey from LA and know the club is associated with the formidable Cirque Du Soleil so the reasoning behind his bold quote is unsurprising:
“I’m a big fan of not just having the music speak but also the visuals and the lighting and I don’t think anyone has ever seen a bigger production in a club. The dj is basically a little dot in a gigantic space of LED walls and projections and it’s just looking really impressive”.
When asked about his DJ ‘style’, Zedd the perfectionist surfaces: “I’m not the type of DJ who goes in and completely wings it. I think about what I do, where am I, what club, what sort of environment, what kind of people do I expect and then I plan something. Then usually 2 hours before the set I get together with my lighting engineer and talk about what we plan on doing.”
And it’s not just show days that are busy. Away from the decks Zedd is busy producing his second album – even though the first – Clarity – is still performing well in the itunes chart (Clarity the single is at #11 at time of writing). But the most attention garnered from his lab work is undoubtedly his involvement in the production of Lady Gaga’s new album ‘’ARTPOP’: I’m really proud. I think it was about 2 years ago when I had the chance to remix a Lady Gaga song and the really loved it and I kind of talked to them and said a dream of mine would be to actually produce a Lady Gaga record and the answer was – ‘you will’. I was like yeah that’s label-talk! Now just two years later I’m right here so that’s really something I’m very proud of”.
Another notable track off the Zedd production line is the global hit single ‘Beauty And A Beat’ recorded by Justin Bieber, even if he and writer Max Martin didn’t make it with JB in mind: “I could not find a spot where I thought it would make sense [on Clarity]. I didn’t really plan on giving it to Justin or writing it for him but I thought it would be interesting to hear him on that track and he nailed it in a couple of takes which was really crazy fast. People underestimate his talent”.
Although he’s truly in the eye of the EDM storm Stateside, the German native is still able to spot good from bad: “there are so many wannabe EDM songs produced by people that have no clue about this type of music and you know they pop up and it’s all those big names and people just don’t care, they’ve heard that a million times. It’s kind of good to see songs that don’t have a soul just drop”.
Back to the club and a remixed version of Clarity drops with a woman suspended from the ceiling in front of Zedd, 6 dancers try to break through the wall behind him and a whole arsenal of lasers are unleashed all around. Everyone inside LIGHT now knows what all the fuss is about.
Zedd plays Yahoo! Wireless Festival on July 13th, catch all the festival highlights exclusively on the 10th & 11th of August only on MTV!
