MTV Review: Calvin Harris Sets Puerto Rico Alight At Bacardi Triangle

The Scotsman had us getting all kinds of excited for Sunday’s MTV EMA as we partied on Palomino Island…

It’s not often that you get invited to party on a private island in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle with international superstars Ellie Goulding, Kendrick Lamar and Calvin Harris, but for 1862 journalists, PRs, invited guests and competition winners, that’s exactly what happened over Halloween weekend.

Bacardi Triangle saw the rum giants charter three jets from three cities – London, New York and Los Angeles – to Puerto Rico, where everyone was treated to three nights of fun at the El Conquistador resort, before being transported to Palomino Island on Saturday evening for the main attraction.

Was there any funny business in one of the most famously mysterious areas of the world? Read on to find out…

Feeling: Having already been warmed up by a Black Magic Halloween pool party on the Friday evening – where real life mermaids flipped their tails back and forth in a spooky waterpark setting – everyone was raring to go by the time the sun set over Puerto Rico. Sailing to Palomino Island, which was used for much of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, the anticipation built as we wondered what more could possibly be in store from our epic adventure.

The Look: As our boats descended on the island, a huge triangular stage came into sight, right on the beach. So dreamy. The bars and picnic tables laid out for dinner added a distinctively festival vibe, while yachts belonging to local residents flanked the island, with the Puerto Ricans deciding that if they couldn’t get tickets they’d find their own way to get involved.

Tunes: After we danced on the sand to some amazing DJs, Ellie Goulding was the first of our Bacardi Triangle trio to take to the stage, performing hits including ‘Starry Eyed’, ‘I Need Your Love’ and ‘Anything Could Happen’. The high-energy set had everyone singing along, with one very excitable local behind us screaming, "I love you Ellie!"throughout. He later explained this was probably the only time he’d ever get to see the singer live, without travelling to the US mainland, so rare are gigs of this size in Puerto Rico.

While Ellie herself admitted she can’t dance, she proved she’s definitely got rhythm, playing guitar, drums and synth before her set was out. Having said at a press conference the day before that she always has a drink before going on stage, the Cuba Libres definitely seemed to have done her the world of good, with finale ‘Burn’ sending the crowd wild.

Next up, Kendrick Lamar switched up the vibe, with plenty of us Brits deciding that we could rap and getting involved. Recent singles ‘B***h Don’t Kill My Vibe’ and ‘Memories Back Then’ were massive crowd pleasers, as was the moment the Californian hip-hop star had everyone singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to one of his band, who was celebrating his 25th. Not only did Kendrick start a sing-a-long; he also smashed a cake in the birthday boy’s face! You can’t fail to have a good time when those kind of antics are going down on stage.

Last, but by no means least, the world’s highest paid DJ took to the stage with a simple introduction: “Puerto Rico, my name is Calvin Harris.” Cue the madness. Playing hit after hit – some his own, some seasonally appropriate options such as Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' – there wasn’t a moment in his set where our feet stopped moving or our fists stopped pumping.

Smoke cannons punctuated the start of every track, with fireworks launching off into the sky on those that really packed a punch. Calvin’s number one anthem ‘Summer’ was one such song, as was his smash hit with Florence Welch, ‘Sweet Nothing’, but perhaps the most mighty of all was Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ which the Scotsman featured on back in 2011. Had there been a suitably strong gentleman nearby, we would have been on his shoulders bopping away when 'Blame' - Calvin's number one track with John Newman - came on, but as it happened we were surrounded by ladies who were just as much in awe of the EDM Godas us.

Banter: While Calvin Harris is a man of few words, Kendrick’s cake antics certainly gave us a giggle – has he been taking tips from Steve Aoki we wonder? Ellie, meanwhile, kept up the laughs she had began on the plane over, particularly when ripping in to her own dance moves. You’ve got to love a girl who can laugh at herself.

Celeb Spots: As previously mentioned, Ellie took the London jet to Puerto Rico with us and – bored in Business Class where her pals were snoozing – took to entertaining the rest of us over the tannoy system and even started a conga line. Obviously once the fasten seatbelts sign had been switched off…

Also on our flight was actress Jaime Winstone, who we later spotted at the Friday night Halloween party, rocking a blonde Sia wig. Awesome!

Sweat Factor: It was 35 degrees in Puerto Rico over the weekend. Sweat was a given.

Summary:While Ellie and Kendrick are amazingly talented in their own right, the night belonged to Mr Calvin Harris, who completely blew us away. Bring on the 2014 MTV EMA in Glasgow this Sunday, where Calvin will no doubt blow the roof off of the SSE Hydro Arena.We. Can’t. Wait.
